Rescuing durian trees after floods is an urgent task
Statistics show that Cat Tien commune currently has 166 hectares of durian flooded, mainly in villages such as Nghia Hung, Quang Ngai 1 and Quang Ngai 2.
Immediately after the water began to recede, the commune government mobilized forces from the front such as the Youth Union and Farmers' Association to go to each garden to support people in pulling young mud, spraying the tree roots, and re-opening the drainage ditch system.

In addition to supporting workers, the unions also instructed people to clean the garden using the right techniques, to limit pests and diseases arising after floods.
Mr. Nguyen Manh Cuong, Quang Ngai 1 village (Cat Tien commune), worried: My family has nearly 3 hectares of durian along the Dong Nai river that were flooded with more than 1 meter of water. After the mud flood, the garden is at risk of killing durian. Currently, the family is focusing on saving their durian garden.
Mr. Ho Quoc Phong, Secretary of the Cat Tien Commune Party Committee, said that the locality identified durian rescue after floods as an urgent task, because this is a key crop directly related to the income of hundreds of households.

"We mobilized maximum on-site forces, went to each garden to support the people in pulling mud, spraying and clearing water. Taking advantage of the early morning will reduce the damage to the people that day," said Mr. Phong.
In Cat Tien 2 commune, according to Mr. Nguyen Hoang Lich, Chairman of the Commune People's Committee, the whole commune has about 158 hectares of perennial trees such as durian, coffee, cocoa, rambutan... flooded. Duc Pho village is the most severely affected area, currently there are still more than 20 hectares of fruit trees that have not been drained, some places are flooded up to 1 meter deep.

"Many durian gardens of the people are in a state of lack of oxygen roots, yellow bristles, and are at risk of exhaustion or death if the water is not pumped out in time. The commune government mobilized local forces and people to clear the ditch system and dig ditches to release water. At the same time, continuous operation of pumps to reduce flooding levels. Many households stay up all night to monitor the garden, proactively reinforce drainage ditches and clear the mud around the tree roots" - Mr. Lich emphasized.
Agricultural sector helps people
According to Mr. Ha Ngoc Chien, Head of the Department of Crop Production and Plant Protection of Lam Dong province, the agricultural sector has issued detailed instructions for people to promptly handle and limit damage after floods.

Measures focus on unblocking drainage ditches, clearing plant remnants, cutting off broken branches and digging up frost to help the root system become more airy.
About 20 to 25 days after the water has completely receded, farmers need to fertilize rotten carrot organics combined with Trichoderma resistant mushrooms to stimulate the plant to recover the root system.

The Department also noted that people should closely monitor diseases that often flare up after floods such as eczema, pinkish fungus, streptococcus, root rot, skin rot... to promptly handle them, avoiding widespread spread.

For the area of durian that is bearing fruit, the industry recommends adding leaf fertilizers containing triangles such as Fe, Bo, Ca, Cu, Zn... to limit cracking and dropping fruit due to sudden changes in moisture.

Currently, the Department of Crop Production and Plant Protection and the Provincial Agricultural Extension Center are sending staff to directly survey and guide each household to implement appropriate technical remedial measures to minimize damage and soon restore production for the province's key durian growing areas.
