At the same time as relocating the 4 tamarind trees, the units also built roads and sidewalks after relocating the 4 tamarind trees to another location.
Mr. Cao Khanh - an officer of the Urban Management Department of Bac Lieu City - said that the relocation of the 4 tamarind trees had been organized by the city's leaders to gather people's opinions many times because these trees were located on the roadside, posing a risk of causing traffic insecurity.
Previously, on October 15, the People's Committee of Bac Lieu city held a meeting with the chair of Mr. Tran Van Mau - Vice Chairman of the City People's Committee - along with representatives of the Department of Transport, Department of Construction and a number of related units and representatives of a number of households in Hamlet 4, Ward 3.
People all agreed with the relocation of these 4 tamarind trees, but also suggested that the remaining tamarind trees need better protection, because these are trees over 100 years old, containing many spiritual elements, associated with the memories of many people.
According to the report of the Urban Management Department of Bac Lieu City, these 4 tamarind trees are currently located under Ba Trieu Street (close to the sidewalk), so there is a high risk of causing traffic insecurity on this route.
According to statistics, in Bac Lieu city, there are a total of 82 tamarind trees over a hundred years old. Of which, Tran Phu street has 35 trees, Ha Huy Tap street has 37 trees, Hai Ba Trung street has 4 trees, and Ba Trieu street has 6 trees. When cutting down 4 tamarind trees lying under Ba Trieu street, the total number of tamarind trees is 78.
Regarding the tamarind trees in Bac Lieu city, long-time residents of Bac Lieu city, aged 70 or 80, all confirmed that from birth to adulthood, they saw these tamarind trees exist.
According to many locals, the hundred-year-old tamarind trees not only provide shade for the city, but they are also valuable historical witnesses, a very unique characteristic of Bac Lieu people as well as creating a deep impression on visitors from afar when coming to Bac Lieu.
