Flood control gate accelerates towards the finish line
In the early days of September 2026, at 6 large tide control culverts under the nearly 10,000 billion VND tide control project, hundreds of workers and machinery and equipment were mobilized to complete the final items.
The works include Muong Chuoi, Tan Thuan, Phu Dinh, Ben Nghe, Phu Xuan and Cay Kho culverts. At the construction site, many items are being urgently completed such as the operating house, protective embankment, boat lock valve complex, mechanical and electrical system, control equipment...
At the Tan Thuan tide control culvert, the current construction volume is about 96%. Key items such as boat sheds, pump bays, anchorages, tower pillars, valve beams... are basically completed. The project has the task of controlling the flow of the Te canal area, contributing to reducing flooding for Tran Xuan Soan street and surrounding residential areas.
Ms. Mai Thi Oanh (60 years old, Tan Thuan ward) said that people have been waiting for the project for many years and hope that the project will be completed soon to reduce flooding. "I just hope to speed up the progress so that at the end of the year there will be no more flooding scenes" - Ms. Oanh said.
The project to solve tidal flooding in the Ho Chi Minh City area taking into account climate change factors includes 6 large tide-blocking culverts, with an aperture of 40 - 160 m; a dyke system along the Saigon River about 7.8 km long and many auxiliary items.
According to Trung Nam Construction Investment Joint Stock Company (Trungnam Group - investor), about 800 workers and engineers are working on the entire project.
In September 2026, the investor plans to connect the SCADA automatic control system, complete the monitoring system and organize trial operation of culverts, including Tan Thuan and Phu Xuan. The entire project aims to be completed synchronously and handed over in November 2026.
When put into operation, the system is expected to control tides, reduce flooding and increase response capacity to climate change in an area of about 570km2, where about 6.5 million people live.
Thanh Da peninsula awaits the final embankment lines
Not only the tide prevention project, another flood and landslide prevention project is also being accelerated, which is the Thanh Da peninsula landslide prevention project.
Mr. Nguyen Van Hat's house (69 years old), located in alley 244 Binh Quoi street, is one of the lowest houses in the area. Almost every high tide, water floods into the house to the knees. "The water recedes very slowly, flooding up and down for a whole week. When water comes in, the refrigerator and wardrobe are damaged, low power outlets short circuits immediately" - Mr. Hat shared.
According to Mr. Hat, the measures to prevent water from in front of the house can only limit garbage from flowing in, and are almost impossible to stop the water flow when the tide rises. "We hope the Thanh Da peninsula landslide prevention project will be completed soon to reduce flooding and prevent landslides," Mr. Hat said.
The Thanh Da peninsula landslide prevention project was approved for investment policy by Ho Chi Minh City in 2006, dividing the project into 4 main sections. However, so far only section 1 of the Thanh Da canal has been completed, while sections 2, 3 and 4 are still unfinished.
Talking to a reporter from Lao Dong Newspaper, Mr. Luu Van Tan - Head of the Waterway Management Department, Ho Chi Minh City Department of Construction - said that the remaining 3 sections are expected to be completed in 2026.
In which, section 2, Saigon Domaine Hotel area, has a dyke line nearly 2.8 km long, with a total investment of more than 319 billion VND. The project has completed about 1.5km; the underwater part reaches about 95%, and the above shallow part is about 70%.
Section 3 through Binh Quoi, Cay Bang, Rach Chua areas is about 4km long, with a total investment of more than 467 billion VND. To date, about 3.9km has been completed, many bidding packages have reached 100%. The remaining items are expected to be completed by the end of the year.
Section 4, from Ly Hoang villa area to La San Mai Thon church, has a dyke line nearly 2.8 km long, with a total capital of more than 380 billion VND. The construction volume has reached about 1.2km; the main bidding packages reached from 77% to 93%.
