On February 20, the Traffic Police Department of Quang Tri Provincial Police said that after completing the search for victims in the boat capsizing on the Gianh River, the unit will deploy plans to ensure safety and order on the entire route.
Representatives of the Traffic Police Department informed that in the past time, the unit has maintained a patrol team from the Gianh port area along the river route. The accident area is within the patrol and control area of the Traffic Police Department. Patrol activities are carried out regularly, especially strengthened before and during the 2026 Lunar New Year.
Regarding the vehicle involved in the accident, the Traffic Police Department said that the overturned boat belongs to the group of rudimentary vehicles with a tonnage of less than 1 ton, with engines. According to the provisions of the Law on Inland Waterway Traffic, this type of vehicle is not subject to registration. The management of rudimentary vehicles in the area is carried out by the commune-level People's Committee.
In the coming time, the Traffic Police Department will continue to coordinate with local authorities on the route to strengthen patrols and inspections; and at the same time promote propaganda to people about regulations to ensure waterway traffic safety. Functional forces will also organize signing commitments with small boat owners to prevent similar accidents.
As Lao Dong Newspaper has reported, the boat capsizing occurred at noon on February 19th on the Gianh River, killing 2 people and leaving 2 missing. After many hours of searching efforts, all victims have been found.
