The hardship of a broken "cardiovascular bridge"
The severe flood that occurred at the end of October left serious consequences for traffic infrastructure in the border area between Da Nang and Quang Nam. At Duy Phuoc Bridge - a vital bridge across the Thu Bon River, the fierce water force eroded the bridge abutments and approach roads, causing a section of the bridge to collapse completely into the riverbed. People's travel between Duy Phuoc commune and Hoi An ward and Dien Ban Dong ward is completely cut off.
According to local people, since the bridge collapsed, people's travel has become more difficult than ever. Mr. Huynh Cong Cuong, a resident of Duy Phuoc commune, shared that before, the distance from his house to work was only about 3km, taking only about 15 minutes by motorbike. But now, when the bridge span has broken, he and hundreds of other workers are forced to go around other routes with a total length of up to 15km.
"Going to work is like a long journey, which consumes both fuel and time, and adds to the worry about traffic safety when having to travel on large roads with a lot of traffic," Mr. Cuong confided.
Ms. Le Thi Tai, a beverage business owner right at the foot of Duy Phuoc Bridge, sadly looks at her deserted restaurant. Before the bridge collapsed, this was a crowded stop for people crossing the road, and every day she could earn a stable income to cover her living expenses. "Now the bridge has collapsed, the road is dead, no one is passing through anymore. The restaurant is deserted, if there are no customers, how can we get by", Ms. Tai shared.
Deploying emergency repair projects
Regarding the incident of Duy Phuoc bridge approach road collapse due to natural disasters, Mr. Nguyen Ha Nam - Director of the Department of Construction of Da Nang City has just signed Decision No. 589/QD-SXD promulgating an order to build emergency works. The project aims to repair and completely overcome the traffic disruption at Duy Phuoc Bridge (Ba Ngan Bridge) - a facility that was severely damaged by the impact of storm No. 12 and floods that have lasted since the end of October 2025.
According to the Decision, the construction is being implemented under an emergency mechanism to ensure urgency and quickly resolve the traffic disruption situation between Nam Phuoc commune and Hoi An ward.
Regarding the technical plan, due to the erosion of the approach road area on the Hoi An ward side and the widening flow, the authorities will build a temporary bridge extending from the existing bridge abutment in the East to replace the drifted approach road. This additional bridge is expected to include 3 steel girder spans I with a total length of 30m.
The project is designed with a width of 3.5m (3m wide bridge surface), using an I500 steel girder structure, a sturdy H300 steel pile foundation system. After completion, the bridge ensures the circulation load for motorbikes and cars from 2.5 tons or less. The existing access road will also be reinforced with stone cages or steel truss to prevent landslides from recurring.
The total estimated cost of the project is about 3 billion VND from career capital. The construction work will be implemented rapidly to be completed and put into use before December 31, 2025.
