On the morning of January 23 (December 24), although the Lunar New Year of At Ty is approaching, flower shops on the streets of Vinh city (Nghe An) are still flooded with goods and consumption is slow.
The area in front of Vinh City Central Park has become a large wild flower market, with a variety of species, colors, and attractive shapes.
“This year we get our products early to sell flowers and ornamental plants to customers early for Tet. Prices are also reasonable, not much higher than last year, however purchasing power is still slow, customers mainly come to look but not many finalize orders” – Mr. Le Van Trung, a flower seller here shared.
According to a survey, the peach, kumquat and Tet flower market this year has many different price segments for customers to choose from, with flower pots and baskets costing only a few tens of thousands of dong, and giant peach trees being sold for billions of dong.
Ms. Nguyen Hoang Yen (Nghi Phu Ward, Vinh City) said: “I have visited many places selling Tet flowers and ornamental plants in the city. My general opinion about the Tet flower market this year in the city is that it is quite quiet, although the flowers and ornamental plants are beautiful, diverse, and reasonably priced.”
According to Ms. Hoang Yen, the reason why the Tet flower market is still quiet may be because this year's economy is difficult, many families tend to cut spending, on the other hand, some people wait until Tet is near, the price of flowers and ornamental plants will decrease sharply.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Hong (from Thai Binh province) said that this year, she brought more than 500 Nhat Tan peach trees to Vinh city to sell for Tet. Although Tet is near, by the morning of January 23, she had only sold about 100 trees, at a price of 1 million VND/tree.
"In the next few days, if purchasing power does not increase dramatically, I may have to reduce the price and sell at cost price to clear the goods back to my hometown," said Ms. Hong.
Ms. Vo Thu Huong (Hung Binh Ward, Vinh City) said that because she understood the tastes of customers, this year's Tet, she imported about 5,000 branches of Phalaenopsis orchids to sell for Tet. Although she has a number of regular customers placing orders, Ms. Huong is still worried about unsold flowers due to importing a large amount of flowers.
“Phalaenopsis orchids have a delicate, luxurious, durable beauty, can be used for a long time, and their prices are increasingly affordable, so they have the ability to reach a large number of customers. Hopefully, in the next few days, the number of customers will increase, and my shop will sell out before Tet,” Ms. Thu Huong shared.
