On September 9, the Steering Committee for searching, repatriating and identifying martyrs' remains of Quang Tri province organized a workshop to verify information about collective martyrs' graves in the Con Tien area, Con Tien commune.
According to documents at the conference, on May 8, 1967, Battalion 4, Regiment 812, Division 324 and units coordinated to attack Con Tien base. The battle took place fiercely, Battalion 4 suffered losses, and many martyrs could not be taken out of the battlefield.
At the conference, Mr. Le Van Cho, 77 years old, former Special Forces soldier of Regiment 812, Division 324, who directly participated in the battle, continued to provide information about the developments and withdrawal direction.
We hope this conference will bring results, meeting the expectations of relatives of martyrs and veterans" - Mr. Cho said.
Another witness is Mr. Nguyen Thi, 80 years old, who used to serve in the US army at Con Tien base and witnessed the burial after the battle. "The scenery changed a lot, but when I returned, the memory was like a movie, I remembered the location more clearly" - Mr. Thi said.
According to statistics, from 1992 to 2022, 83 sets of martyrs' remains have been collected in the Con Tien area. Through summarizing information sources, functional agencies forecast that there are still about 80-90 sets of martyrs' remains that have not been collected.
Mr. Le Van Bao - Vice Chairman of Quang Tri Provincial People's Committee, Head of the Provincial Steering Committee said that after the workshop, the province will propose to expand the search in all suspected burial areas.
The search will be carried out in the spirit of easy to do first, difficult to do later, cautious and meticulous" - Mr. Bao said.
Major General Doan Quang Hoa - Director of the Department of Social Policy, General Department of Politics proposed to continue reviewing dossiers, collecting witness information, comparing documents from the United States and carefully surveying terrain.
