Taking DNA samples to identify 167 martyrs in Quang Tri

Quang Tri - 167 unidentified martyrs at 3 cemeteries in Dong Hoi ward were sampled for DNA testing.

On September 6, Dong Hoi Ward People's Committee, Quang Tri province said that forces are organizing biological sample taking and information digitization to serve the identification of 167 martyrs buried at 3 martyrs' cemeteries in the area.

Activities were deployed at Hai Thanh Martyrs' Cemetery, Nam Ly Martyrs' Cemetery and Duc Ninh Martyrs' Cemetery.

According to the plan, from September 5-12, 2026, forces will excavate and take biological samples at 167 graves of unidentified martyrs.

In which, Hai Thanh Martyrs Cemetery has 74 martyrs' graves sampled; Nam Ly Martyrs Cemetery has 79 graves and Duc Ninh Martyrs Cemetery has 14 graves.

Sampling is carried out within the framework of "Operation 500 days and nights to promote the search, repatriation and identification of martyrs' remains".

Along with taking biological samples, information, records and artifacts related to each tomb are also collected, digitized, preserved and handed over to serve DNA testing.

According to Dong Hoi Ward People's Committee, the implementation process has the coordination of relevant forces, complying with procedures, ensuring strictness, accuracy, safety and solemnity.

Through biological sample taking and DNA testing, information about unidentified martyrs will be gradually compared and verified.

The results of the assessment are the basis for determining the identity of martyrs, thereby contributing to bringing information and names of martyrs back to relatives and families.

According to the plan, excavation and sampling at 3 martyrs' cemeteries in Dong Hoi ward will be carried out until September 12, 2026.
