Hydropower plant in Da Nang cuts hundreds of millions of m3 of water, reduces flooding downstream

Trà Ban |

Da Nang - Floods have killed 6 people, 4 people are missing, 19 people are injured, and more than 10 communes are completely isolated.

This information was announced by the People's Committee of Da Nang City at an online meeting between the Government and localities on response and overcoming the consequences of floods chaired by Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh.

Chairman of the People's Committee of Da Nang City Pham Duc An said that continuous heavy rains have caused deep flooding in many plain communes, serious landslides in mountainous areas, cutting off traffic and isolating dozens of residential areas. The whole city currently has 10 communes with 48 households completely isolated; more than 13 houses collapsed and nearly 2km of roads were severely damaged.

The city has established a Forward Command Committee to direct on-duty in key areas; the police and military forces are mobilized to be on duty 24/7, strictly implementing the "4 on-site" motto to support people in flooded areas.

Notably, large hydropower plants in the area are actively operating to reduce floods downstream. A Vuong Hydropower Plant has cut nearly 451 million m3 of water, Song Bung 4 Hydropower Plant has cut about 327 million m3 of water, contributing to limiting flooding in downstream areas.

The Chairman of the People's Committee of Da Nang City proposed that the Central Government support funding to overcome and repair traffic infrastructure, ensure travel, production and stabilize people's lives after natural disasters.

The Da Nang City Party Committee directed units to focus on environmental sanitation, ensuring health care and preventing epidemics immediately after the floodwaters receded.
