Metro No. 2 is more than 11 km long, with a total investment of nearly VND47,900 billion (about more than 2 billion USD), connecting the city center with the Northwest gateway.
The project was approved in 2010, but has been plagued by delays and is currently delayed to 2030.
According to the Ho Chi Minh City Urban Railway Management Board (MAUR), the site clearance work has been 100% completed, handing over all 585/585 cases.
The relocation of technical infrastructure (electricity, water supply and drainage, lighting, traffic signals, trees, telecommunications) at 12/12 locations is also being accelerated.
The project includes 8 main construction packages. Up to now, CP1 package - construction of office buildings and auxiliary works at Tham Luong depot has been completed and put into use.
The remaining seven packages (from CP2 to CP7, including tunnels, underground stations, elevated sections, electromechanical, railways, etc.) are being reviewed and updated for adjustment.
The city is currently focusing on implementing procedures to adjust the project in the form of public investment, applying the special mechanism of Resolution 188, with the goal of starting construction by the end of 2025.

MAUR said it has approved a consulting package to prepare an adjusted feasibility study report and technical design (FEED), and supported bidding for the main construction packages.
The package has a implementation period of 12 months, worth more than 175 billion VND, by the Guangzhou Metro Design & Research Institute Co., Ltd. (China) and three domestic and international consulting companies.
The main task of the consultant is to prepare a project adjustment report (addition of scale, conversion of capital from ODA to Ho Chi Minh City budget), update technical designs suitable to reality and support the selection of construction contractors. This is considered a key package, deciding the project's progress.
At the same time, the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee has assigned the Department of Construction to coordinate with the Department of Finance, MAUR and related units to continue working with Truong Hai Group Joint Stock Company ( Thaco) - one of the investors interested in Metro No. 2 projects to agree on the implementation plan (investment form, capital source, technology, route direction, progress...). The results will be reported before September 15, 2025.

Metro Line 2 is the second urban railway line in Ho Chi Minh City, after Metro Line 1 (Ben Thanh - Suoi Tien) which was put into operation at the end of 2024.
When completed, the route will connect the city center with the Northwest region, contributing to sharing the pressure on major routes such as Cach Mang Thang Tam, Truong Chinh, Cong Hoa..., while creating conditions for Ho Chi Minh City to develop compact urban areas according to the TOD model.
