Quang Tri - Functional agencies are searching for witnesses, reviewing information to determine the location of the mass grave of martyrs who sacrificed in the 1967 battle.

On August 9, Ms. Tran Thi Oanh - Chairwoman of the People's Committee of Con Tien commune (Quang Tri province) said that the locality is coordinating with functional agencies to verify and search for information related to the mass grave of martyrs in the Con Tien area.

According to Ms. Oanh, on May 8, 1967, a battle took place at the foot of Con Tien hill by special forces to break through the "electronic fence of McNamara".

In the battle, many officers and soldiers sacrificed. According to information collected, there is information that the martyrs were later buried collectively in a ditch about 60m long in this area.

From information provided by people, Con Tien Commune People's Committee and functional agencies have deployed verification and search, but so far the specific location has not been determined.

Con Tien Commune People's Committee is searching for people who have directly witnessed, participated in combat or known information related to the burial of martyrs after the battle on May 8, 1967.

The locality hopes that veterans, former militia and guerrillas and people will have information about the burial location of the soldiers' remains to provide to functional agencies, contributing to the verification, search and repatriation work.

Regarding this matter, the Office of the National Steering Committee for Searching, Repatriating and Identifying Martyrs' Remains has requested the Steering Committee for Searching, Repatriating and Identifying Martyrs' Remains of Quang Tri province to direct specialized agencies to coordinate with localities to urgently review and summarize dossiers and documents related to the battle on May 8, 1967 at Con Tien base.

At the same time, promote the search for historical witnesses; analyze and systematize the collected information and combine exploration with ground-penetrating radar equipment to zone out locations where collective martyrs' graves may exist.

Based on the survey results, units will complete dossiers and organize scientific conferences to verify and conclude information, as a basis for deploying the search and repatriation of martyrs' remains according to regulations.
