Thu Thiem 4 Bridge - an important piece connecting the East and the South
After more than a decade of being "on paper" due to static planning and investment mechanisms, the Thu Thiem 4 bridge project connecting the East and South of Ho Chi Minh City has officially been approved for investment policy by the Ho Chi Minh City People's Council, expected to start construction at the end of 2026.
Thu Thiem 4 bridge is planned to cross the Saigon River, starting point at Nguyen Van Linh street (area intersecting with Tan Thuan 2 bridge, Tan Thuan ward) and ending point at Nguyen Co Thach street, Thu Thiem New Urban Area (An Khanh ward). The project has a scale of 8 lanes (6 motorized lanes, 2 mixed lanes), the total length of the route is about 2.16km, of which the bridge section is more than 1.63km long. The project is invested by the State budget with a total investment of more than 5,063 billion VND.
From the end point of the bridge, the flow of vehicles will quickly connect to the Mai Chi Tho axis - the avenue considered the "backbone" of traffic in the East of Ho Chi Minh City. Currently, during peak hours, the traffic volume on Mai Chi Tho towards Thu Thiem tunnel and Thu Thiem 2 bridge is always very high. When Thu Thiem 4 bridge is completed, people will have a new connection direction between the South and the East, reducing pressure on existing traffic axes.
On the West bank of the Saigon River, Nguyen Tat Thanh road (old District 4) currently serves urban traffic and "carries" a large number of container trucks entering and leaving the port area. This road is often overloaded, especially in sections near Tan Thuan bridge. Thu Thiem 4 bridge when put into operation will create a new direction, contributing to reducing pressure on Nguyen Tat Thanh - Khanh Hoi bridge, Kenh Te bridge...
Opening a new road to "rescue" traffic jams in Cat Lai - Phu Huu port cluster
Cat Lai - Phu Huu port cluster, located along the Dong Nai River in Cat Lai and Long Truong wards, is a key port cluster of Ho Chi Minh City and the Southern key economic region.
However, the road system connecting to this area today such as Nguyen Thi Dinh, Nguyen Duy Trinh, Dong Van Cong, Vo Chi Cong, Mai Chi Tho... is often seriously congested, especially during peak hours and import and export peak seasons.
Prolonged traffic jams not only affect people's lives but also increase logistics costs, reduce the competitiveness of goods, and pose a risk of traffic unsafety.
To remove this "bottleneck", Ho Chi Minh City invests in the Cat Lai - Phu Huu inter-port road, directly connecting to the Ho Chi Minh City - Long Thanh - Dau Giay expressway and Ring Road 3.The road has a total length of nearly 6km, a cross-section width of 60m.On the route, Ba Cua bridge will be built on a scale of 10 lanes; the section from Phu Huu port to the expressway intersection and Ring Road 3 will build a 4-lane elevated road.
The project uses the State budget, divided into two parts: Compensation, resettlement and technical infrastructure relocation with a cost of about 1,400 billion VND; construction costs of about 7,400 billion VND.The project is expected to start construction in the fourth quarter of 2026 and be completed in the fourth quarter of 2028.
When put into operation, the route will form a specialized traffic axis directly connecting the Cat Lai - Phu Huu port system with the inter-regional traffic network including Ring Road 3, Ho Chi Minh City - Long Thanh - Dau Giay expressway, Ben Luc - Long Thanh expressway. Thereby, shortening transportation time, increasing travel capacity, reducing pressure on existing routes such as: Nguyen Thi Dinh, Nguyen Duy Trinh, Hanoi Highway, Ring Road 2 East branch, contributing to fundamentally solving congestion in the country's largest port area.
Vinh Loc road (section from Tran Van Giau to road 2A - Vinh Loc Industrial Park) is more than 7.1km long, and will be expanded from 7-8m to 30m. The project also builds a new Ba Tri bridge 31m long and completes two key intersections including Vinh Loc - Tran Van Giau and Vinh Loc - Quach Dieu - Vo Van Van - Nguyen Thi Tu intersection, with a total investment of about 6,870 billion VND.
The project is expected to start construction in the first quarter of 2027, be completed and put into operation in the third quarter of 2028. When completed, the road will play the role of a parallel axis, sharing heavy truck traffic with National Highway 1A and Provincial Road 10, contributing to reducing inter-regional traffic congestion. In the long term, Vinh Loc road and Nguyen Thi Tu, Lang Le - Bau Co, Ba Ty, Hoang Phan Thai routes will form the "2.5 Ring Road" axis, connecting and distributing traffic volume to the western area of Ho Chi Minh City.
