The Nguyen Van Linh - Nguyen Huu Tho intersection (District 7), the southern gateway to Ho Chi Minh City, is often congested due to heavy traffic, especially heavy trucks.
In 2020, the VND830 billion underpass project at this intersection was implemented with two 456m long tunnels, three lanes in each direction. After four years of construction, the two tunnel branches will open to traffic in October and December 2024, helping to reduce congestion in the area.
At the eastern gateway, An Phu intersection (Thu Duc City) is also being upgraded with a total investment of more than 3,400 billion VND.
The project will build three floors, including a two-way tunnel connecting the Ho Chi Minh City - Long Thanh - Dau Giay Expressway with Mai Chi Tho Street, then continuing to extend through the Mai Chi Tho - Dong Van Cong intersection. Above, two overpasses and a central roundabout will complete the traffic connection.
At the Mai Chi Tho - Dong Van Cong intersection, in addition to the underpass extending through here, two overpasses were also built to connect these routes together.
Ba Dat and Giong Ong To 2 bridges have been completed but not yet put into operation, and are expected to open to traffic along with the entire An Phu intersection on December 31, 2025.
When completed, An Phu intersection will not only reduce traffic congestion but also increase traffic capacity, connecting ports, the Southeast region and Long Thanh airport.
Faced with increasingly serious traffic congestion, the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Transport is researching and proposing the construction of overpasses and underpasses at some complex intersections.
Of which, two key intersections in the central area are the Dien Bien Phu - Ngo Gia Tu - Ly Thai To - Le Hong Phong intersection (located between District 3 and District 10) and the Nguyen Tri Phuong - Ngo Gia Tu - Nguyen Chi Thanh intersection (located between District 5 and District 10) are being proposed by the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Transport to invest in building overpasses.
These intersections are in the form of roundabouts, with the Workers and An Duong Vuong monuments at the center, but the increased traffic density has led to serious congestion.
The overpass here will be built with branches crossing the intersection, minimizing the current intersection situation.
Another important project is the construction of an overpass at the Nguyen Oanh - Phan Van Tri intersection (Go Vap district).
This project is expected to have a 500m long bridge, 2-4 lanes wide, helping two-way vehicles move conveniently on Nguyen Oanh route across Phan Van Tri street, reducing traffic jams for this densely populated area.
In addition, in the suburbs, the HCMC Department of Transport also plans to invest in building an overpass or underpass at the intersection of Highway 1 and Road 7-8 (Binh Tan District). This project will be about 400m long, 2-4 lanes wide, allowing two-way traffic along Road 7-8.
According to the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Transport, the city currently manages more than 9.5 million vehicles, including more than 1 million cars and nearly 8.5 million motorbikes. If all of these vehicles were placed on the road, the area required would be double the current road surface area.
Each year, the number of vehicles increases by an average of 6.5%, while the road surface area increases by only 0.2%. Notably, in the inner city area, the road surface area has not increased over the past 5 years.
