The above information was announced by the Ho Chi Minh City Public Transport Management Center (GTCC Center) on December 25, after working with relevant units to clarify the risk of disruption in the supply of CNG for buses from the beginning of 2026.
Previously, Southern Petroleum Trading Joint Stock Company (KMN) said that on December 18, 2025, Vietnam Oil and Gas Low Voltage Gas Distribution Company (PV GAS D) issued a document notifying the suspension of gas supply to KMN from January 1, 2026. PV GAS D is currently a exclusive unit supplying natural gas input for the KMN to produce CNG.
KMN believes that if there is no alternative gas source, from the beginning of 2026, hundreds of CNG buses operating in Ho Chi Minh City will be at risk of having to stop running, greatly affecting public passenger transport.
Regarding this issue, the GTCC Center said that Ho Chi Minh City currently has more than 300 buses using CNG fuel operating on subsidized bus routes.
Maintaining a stable supply and controlling the selling price of CNG is especially important to ensure the continuous operation of bus routes, serving the travel needs of the people.
According to the GTCC Center, since April 1, the price of CNG for buses has increased by about 1.0 USD/mmBTU. As soon as it received information from the KMN about the possibility of difficulties in the supply of CNG gas due to the input gas purchase and sale contract with PV GAS D expiring on December 31, 2025 but not yet extended, the Center proactively worked with the KMN on November 7, 2025 to clarify the situation.
After the meeting, the GTCC Center advised the Department of Construction to send a document to Vietnam Weather Corporation, requesting support to balance gas sources, ensure stable supply and maintain reasonable prices, equivalent to the period before April 2025. This was also reported by the Department of Construction to the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee and the Vietnam National Industrial and Energy Group.
In documents and working process, the GTCC Center and the Department of Construction agreed on the viewpoint, requesting the gas supplier (PV GAS) to implement two key goals: ensuring a stable supply of CNG, absolutely without interruption of public passenger transport activities; at the same time, maintaining reasonable prices, long-term stability to support transport units to operate effectively.
Through the process of regular and proactive exchanges with fuel suppliers, the GTCC Center said it has received positive signals. Accordingly, the supply of CNG to buses in Ho Chi Minh City in 2026 will be maintained stably.
Currently, relevant units are completing the procedures for signing a gas supply contract for 2026. Therefore, the operation of the CNG bus system in the city will operate normally, without the risk of stopping operations as previously concerned.
