Ho Chi Minh City connects Hoang Sa and Truong Sa roads to Nguyen Huu Canh to reduce congestion

MINH QUÂN |

Ho Chi Minh City - Hoang Sa and Truong Sa roads along Nhieu Loc - Thi Nghe canal are expected to be connected from Nguyen Thi Minh Khai street to Nguyen Huu Canh street.

This is one of the notable contents in the coordination plan to implement solutions to handle points at risk of traffic congestion in the area in 2026, which is currently being consulted by the Department of Construction with relevant units.

According to the plan, the city will prioritize the implementation of a group of construction solutions with the goal of rapidly increasing traffic capacity on roads that are frequently overloaded.

In which, some urgent items, not entangled in site clearance, will be accelerated for investment such as tunnels, underpasses, bridge elevation, addition of approach bridge branches, pedestrian overpasses and temporary prefabricated steel overpasses... These projects are expected to be completed and put into operation in 2026.

At the same time, Ho Chi Minh City is also studying and proposing an emergency public investment mechanism and an emergency construction order for key transport projects, in order to quickly handle "bottleneck points" that are causing prolonged congestion.

Notably, the city is oriented to strongly develop infrastructure to serve pedestrians and bicycles, such as building pedestrian overpasses with roofs, forming lanes or roads dedicated to non-motorized vehicles.

Regarding traffic organization, many technical solutions have also been proposed. The city will study the construction and upgrading of underpasses under the bridge to organize turnaround points, towards closing conflict intersections. For example, raising the vertical clearance of underpasses under Khanh Hoi bridge for bus traffic, thereby adjusting traffic organization at Nguyen Tat Thanh - Hoang Dieu intersection.

Focus on connecting roads that are not yet open (such as connecting Hoang Sa and Truong Sa roads from Nguyen Thi Minh Khai street to Nguyen Huu Canh street...).

In addition, adding bridge access branches to connect canal roads to level bridges has also been set out, such as connecting from Hoang Sa and Truong Sa streets to Bong bridge, Hoang Hoa Tham bridge, Bui Huu Nghia bridge...

Another notable solution is to study the installation of prefabricated overpasses specifically for two-wheeled vehicles at intersections with large truck and passenger traffic volumes. These overpasses serve the needs of turning left and turning around, contributing to limiting traffic conflicts and reducing the risk of accidents on Do Muoi and Le Quang Dao streets.

In addition, electronic sign systems (light signs) will be installed at gateways and main roads to warn early about congestion, helping people proactively choose suitable routes.

From the perspective of regional connectivity, Ho Chi Minh City aims to accelerate the progress of key infrastructure projects linked to Long Thanh International Airport.

Projects such as An Phu traffic intersection, expanding the 4 km section leading to the expressway, or expanding the Ho Chi Minh City - Long Thanh - Dau Giay expressway from 4 lanes to 8 lanes are required to be completed in 2026. At the same time, the city continues to promote research on the Thu Thiem - Long Thanh railway line.

Along with new investments, improving the efficiency of existing infrastructure exploitation is also focused on through road geometry renovation, widening visibility, adding goalposts, road markings, installing signs, surveillance cameras and automatic speed measuring systems.
