Ho Chi Minh City expands nearly 10 km of National Highway 1 from 6 lanes to 10-12 lanes, combining upgrading intersections and building overpasses to solve traffic jams at the gateway to the Mekong Delta.

The Ho Chi Minh City Department of Construction has just submitted to the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee for appraisal the Feasibility Study Report of Component Project 3: Upgrading and expanding National Highway 1 (section from Kinh Duong Vuong street to the border of Tay Ninh province) according to the public-private partnership (PPP) method, BOT contract (build - operate - transfer).

This section of National Highway 1 is about 9.62 km long, passing through Tan Tao, An Lac, Binh Dong wards and Tan Nhut commune, Binh Chanh, and will be expanded to 60 m, with a scale of 10 - 12 lanes.

In which, the main route is arranged with 6 - 8 lanes with a design speed of 80 km/h; on both sides are 4 parallel lanes with a speed of 60 km/h.

The project is divided into 3 sections. The section from Kinh Duong Vuong intersection (An Lac roundabout) to after Tan Kien intersection, 1.7 km long, will be renovated and expanded to at least 12 lanes.

The section from behind Tan Kien intersection to before Ben Luc - Long Thanh expressway intersection, 7 km long, is fully invested with 12 lanes.

The remaining 0.8 km section from behind the Ben Luc - Long Thanh expressway intersection to the border of Tay Ninh province will be built with 10 lanes.

The project utilizes the existing 2 Binh Dien bridges (6 lanes) and builds a new 6-lane bridge unit on the right side.

Important intersections such as Binh Thuan, Tan Kien and Ben Luc - Long Thanh expressway intersection will be upgraded and expanded synchronously.

The project also builds new grade-separated intersections at Kinh Duong Vuong and Doan Nguyen Tuan street. In which, build a 4-lane overpass on National Highway 1 across the axes of Kinh Duong Vuong and Tran Dai Nghia.

The total investment of component project 3 is more than 6.674 billion VND (including loan interest). The project implementation period is from 2026 to 2028, completion and commissioning from 2029.

In addition to component project 3, the National Highway 1 expansion project also includes two component projects serving site clearance work.

Component project 1 is implemented in Tan Tao and An Lac wards (formerly Binh Tan district), with a total capital of nearly 1,068 billion VND. The project affects 101 households, of which 61 households must be completely cleared.

Component project 2 is implemented in Binh Dong ward, Tan Nhut commune and Binh Chanh commune (formerly Binh Chanh district), with a larger scale with a total capital of nearly 8,543 billion VND. About 2,140 households have their land recovered, of which 1,761 households must be completely cleared.

Currently, relevant localities are urgently paying compensation and completing land recovery to hand over the site on schedule this year.

National Highway 1 section passing through the western gateway is currently only 20 - 25 m wide with 6 lanes, often overloaded, especially during peak hours and holidays and Tet.

This is also a route directly connecting with many strategic traffic axes such as Vo Van Kiet, Nguyen Van Linh, Ho Chi Minh City - Trung Luong expressway, Ben Luc - Long Thanh expressway and Mien Tay bus station.

According to the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Construction, the expansion of National Highway 1 combined with Ring Road 2, Ring Road 3 and Ring Road 4 in the future will contribute to completing the inter-regional transport network, strengthening transport capacity and promoting economic development in the Southern region.
