National Highway 50B, 55 km long, plays an important role in connecting Ho Chi Minh City and the Western region, connecting Ho Chi Minh City through Long An to Tien Giang.
The starting point of the route is on Pham Hung Street (HCMC) and the end point is at Trung Luong intersection (Tien Giang). Although this route has been planned for a long time, it has not been invested in construction.
According to the Department of Transport of Ho Chi Minh City, the People's Committee of Ho Chi Minh City plans to invest in the route through the city in the period 2026-2030.
The section through Ho Chi Minh City will pass through Nha Be and Binh Chanh districts, approximately 5.8 km long, with a 40 m wide road surface for 6 lanes. The total preliminary investment of the project is up to nearly 5,300 billion VND.
According to the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Transport, National Highway 50B has been added to the Ho Chi Minh City Master Plan Adjustment Project to 2040 and vision to 2060. After the Prime Minister approves this project, Ho Chi Minh City will update the zoning plans as a basis for investment implementation.
The Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee has developed a medium-term public investment plan for the 2026-2030 period and reported to the Ho Chi Minh City People's Council, proposing that the Central Government support 50% of the investment capital for the section located in the city, equivalent to about VND 2,619 billion.
To have a basis for investment implementation, Ho Chi Minh City proposed that the Ministry of Transport soon complete the plan and investment plan for National Highway 50B synchronously along the entire route, report to the Prime Minister to assign localities to organize implementation; at the same time, propose support from the central budget to invest in the section in Ho Chi Minh City.
According to the assessment of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Transport, National Highway 50B will not only help strengthen the connection between Ho Chi Minh City and the Western provinces but also contribute to significantly reducing the load on the current National Highway 50. This route will promote the development of urban areas and industrial zones along the route, help reduce logistics costs and facilitate the circulation of goods from the West to Ho Chi Minh City.
Currently, traffic connections from Ho Chi Minh City to the Mekong Delta mainly rely on routes such as National Highway 50, National Highway 1 and Ho Chi Minh City - Trung Luong Expressway.
However, these routes are under great pressure in terms of traffic volume. Therefore, expanding and investing in new routes such as National Highway 50B is necessary to meet the needs of regional development and connectivity.
In addition to the National Highway 50B project, Ho Chi Minh City is also investing in expanding National Highway 50, the section passing through the city, with a total investment of nearly 1,500 billion VND.
The city also plans to expand National Highway 1, from Kinh Duong Vuong Street to the border of Long An, under the BOT (build-operate-transfer) model, with a total estimated capital of about VND12,876 billion.
At the same time, the project to expand the Ho Chi Minh City - Trung Luong Expressway is also being promoted, with a scale of 8 lanes for motor vehicles and 2 emergency lanes. The city has agreed on the scale and scope of investment according to the proposal of the investor consortium.
The two expressway routes leading to Binh Thuan - Cho Dem and Tan Tao - Cho Dem will be expanded to 6 motor lanes and 2 mixed lanes, with funding from the Ho Chi Minh City budget.
