Ho Chi Minh City is preparing to implement 3 flood control projects worth more than 8,000 billion VND in the Thu Duc market area, hoping to fundamentally handle the prolonged flooding situation for many years.

The Ho Chi Minh City Department of Construction has just included 3 key projects in the list expected to be implemented in the 2026 - 2030 period according to urgent requirements that need to be implemented immediately, in order to handle serious flooding points in the Thu Duc market area.

The Thu Duc canal renovation project is the largest in scale with a total investment of more than 5,804 billion VND, expected to be implemented from 2027 to 2029.

The project will build a dyke line about 3km long, including more than 2.3km of Thu Duc canal and 650m of Nha Tra canal; build a pumping station with a capacity of 120,000m3/hour and a system of roads along the canal according to the plan.

In addition to existing road sections, the project also adds about 1.4km of new roads 14m wide, including a road surface of 8m and sidewalks on both sides 3m wide. It is expected that about 204 households will be affected by the project.

The Linh Tay stream drainage system construction project has a total of about 2,774 billion VND.

This project will upgrade and expand about 1.66km of urban roads; build a drainage system about 1.73km long according to the planned basin. About 485 households are affected. The expected implementation progress is from 2027 to 2029.

The regulating lake project at Linh Tay Sports Center has a total capital of more than 178 billion VND.

According to the design, the regulating lake is 70m long, 59m wide, 5.2m deep, using Cross-wave panels with a storage capacity of about 13,000m3 of water.

The project also builds a sedimentation lake, a drainage pumping tunnel and a synchronous water collection culvert system. Currently, the project is in the investment preparation phase and is expected to be completed in 2028.

According to the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Construction, when completed, these projects will contribute to handling 6 heavy flooding points, which regularly affect people's lives around Thu Duc market, including the routes: Kha Van Can, Duong Van Cam, Dang Thi Ranh, Ho Van Tu, Tam Tam Xa and To Ngoc Van.

Functional agencies said that the flooding situation in Thu Duc area stems from many concomitant causes such as climate change, heavy rain combined with high tides, rapid urbanization and low terrain in the form of "panholes" causing water to easily accumulate.

In addition, many roads do not have complete drainage systems or are not synchronously connected; the area of concrete is increasing, reducing the ability to absorb natural water. The situation of waste causing manhole blockage, encroachment on canals and drainage corridors also makes flooding increasingly serious.

In addition to 3 new projects, Ho Chi Minh City has also been and is implementing a number of other flood control projects in the Thu Duc market area. Among them, the Cau Ngang canal dredging and renovation project has been completed.

The project to renovate the drainage system in the Thu Duc market area, including Duong Van Cam, Dang Thi Ranh, Kha Van Can and Ho Van Tu routes, is expected to be completed in September 2026.
