On August 31st, even during the National Day holiday, dozens of workers along with excavators and rollers were still busy constructing on the road along Xuyen Tam canal, the section from Luong Ngoc Quyen street to Vam Thuat river, belonging to An Nhon ward.
At the section passing through Van Lang University, the road surface has been asphalted. At both ends of the route, the area near Vam Thuat River and Luong Ngoc Quyen road has been paved with stone to prepare for asphalt paving. Workers are also completing sidewalk curbs.
Ms. Phan Thi Hoang Yen (70 years old, An Nhon ward) said she is very happy that the new spacious road is about to be opened to traffic. According to Ms. Yen, this area used to be a dead end, with dense trees and many snakes and centipedes, so people did not dare to travel in the evening.
“Previously, this place was as dense as a wild forest. Now the canal has been renovated, the new road has been opened, people have spacious space to travel, and the elderly and children also have places to exercise” - Ms. Yen said.
Mr. Huynh Sanh (77 years old, An Nhon ward) also highly appreciated the project's construction speed. According to him, this area was previously muddy, desolate, and traffic was difficult. After being renovated, the landscape has changed significantly.
Mr. Sanh said that construction units work day and night to ensure progress. When completed, the road will not only make travel more convenient but also create conditions for the area on both sides of the canal to develop.
More than 1.4 km of road preparing to open to traffic is one of the items under package XL-03, the section from Luong Ngoc Quyen road to Vam Thuat river, started in May 2025.
The bidding package includes the construction of a dyke along both banks of the canal with a total length of about 2.7 km; dredging the canal bed 3.5 m deep, 20 m wide.
The project also builds more than 2.84 km of traffic roads along both banks of the canal. In which, the left bank is newly built more than 1.4 km; the right bank is upgraded, expanded and strengthened more than 1.4 km of existing roads. The road surface is 6 - 11 m wide.
Drainage, lighting, and technical trenches are also invested synchronously. The green area along Xuyen Tam canal is 3.5 - 21 m wide, including miniatures and park space, with a total area of about 2.88 ha.
Mr. Phan Nhat Linh - Head of Project Management Board 3 (Ho Chi Minh City Urban Infrastructure Construction Investment Project Management Board, the investor) - said that on the morning of September 2nd, about 1.4 km of the left bank of Xuyen Tam canal (belonging to An Nhon ward) will be technically opened to traffic, celebrating the 81st National Day.
To date, at package XL-03, the foundation treatment item using CDM technology has been completed; embankment has reached about 90%, wastewater collection 97%, traffic roads 70% and technical trenches 75%.
The remaining items, including dredging the canal bed, green trees, lighting, technical trenches, railings and right bank traffic roads, are expected to be completed in November 2026. The entire XL-03 package is expected to be completed and put into use in 2026.
The project to dredge and renovate Xuyen Tam canal (from Nhieu Loc - Thi Nghe canal to Vam Thuat river) is nearly 9 km long, including the main route of more than 6.6 km and 3 branch routes Cau Son, Binh Loi, Binh Trieu of more than 2.2 km long.
The project has a total investment of more than 17,200 billion VND from the Ho Chi Minh City budget.
In addition to XL-03, the Xuyen Tam canal renovation project also has two bidding packages underway.
Package XL-02, the section from Bui Dinh Tuy bridge to Luong Ngoc Quyen street, including Binh Loi canal and Binh Trieu canal (Binh Thanh and Binh Loi Trung wards), started construction at the end of 2025. Currently, 13 construction fronts are being deployed, with a volume of about 10%.
Package XL-01, the section from Nhieu Loc - Thi Nghe canal to Bui Dinh Tuy bridge, including Cau Son canal (Gia Dinh and Binh Thanh wards), started construction at the end of 2025. The package is being constructed at 4 locations, with a volume of about 5%.
According to the direction of the Chairman of Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee, the Urban Infrastructure Project Management Board is developing a plan to shorten the completion time of the entire Xuyen Tam canal project to December 2027.
