According to the report, Ms. N.T. H (58 years old), the victim in the passenger car overturning incident that occurred on National Highway 19, Gia Lai province. At about 6:27 pm on August 31, the Emergency Department, Cho Ray Hospital received Ms. H. after being transferred from Hung Vuong Gia Lai Hospital.
Previously, Ms. H. was traveling on a passenger car with license plate 50E-4417 on National Highway 19, heading Ham Rong - Quy Nhon. The car encountered a loss of control and overturned onto the side of the road.
After the accident, she was taken to Hung Vuong Gia Lai Hospital for emergency treatment, then transferred to Cho Ray Hospital for further treatment.
Upon admission, the patient was alert and had good contact. Notably, the patient was completely paralyzed in both lower extremities, with muscle strength 0/5, loss of sensation in the skin area from the navel down and was being inserted with a urinary catheter.
MRI results performed earlier at Hung Vuong Gia Lai Hospital showed that the patient had fracture of vertebrae D12, complex fracture of vertebrae L1 with fragmented bone compressing the spinal cord, accompanied by spinal spur fractures of vertebraes D12, L1, L2, L3 and L4 on the left side.
In addition, chest X-ray results recorded uterine fracture on the 3rd, 4th and 5th ribs on the left side. Abdominal ultrasound did not detect free fluid in the abdominal cavity.
After being examined by neurosurgeon specialists, the patient was indicated for emergency surgery to stiffen and decompress the spine from D11 to L1. The surgery was performed on the evening of August 31.
On September 1, the first day after surgery, the patient was awake and had good contact. However, the paralysis of both lower limbs remained, muscle strength 0/5. The patient continued to be monitored and cared for after surgery, the surgical wound was dry.
Cho Ray Hospital diagnosed the patient with lumbar spinal injury, including fracture of vertebrae D12, complex fracture of vertebrae L1 with fragmented bone compressing the spinal cord; spinal spur fractures D12, L1, L2, L3, L4 on the left side. The patient also suffered chest trauma due to a ruptured arch on ribs 3, 4, 5 on the left side, accompanied by hypertension and type 2 diabetes.
The hospital said it will continue to monitor the post-operative condition and report the treatment progress to the Ministry of Health and the Department of Medical Examination and Treatment Management.
