From a pilot model to a daily habit
The waste classification model at source has been piloted by Le Loi ward (from 2025 to merge into Lach Tray ward) since November 2019 in residential group No. 3. Garbage is divided into two types, inorganic and organic. By early 2020, the model continued to be expanded and deployed in residential groups No. 2 and gradually "covered" residential groups in the ward.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Bich Hong - Chairwoman of the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of Lach Tray Ward - said that in order to put the model into practice, 6 mobilization committees in 6 residential groups were established, each committee has 10 to 12 people including secretaries, group leaders, heads of front work committees, heads of branches... Every afternoon, the mobilization committee and officers of the Ward People's Committee, employees of Hai Phong Urban Environment Company Limited go to every alley, knock on every door to propagate, mobilize, guide, and remind people to maintain the habit of classifying solid waste at source. Propaganda work is also carried out daily through the loudspeaker system, at the bulletin boards of residential groups; through Zalo groups, Facebook...
As a result, by October 2023, 1,370/1,927 households in the whole ward had classified waste, reaching 71%. By October 2024, the rate of households implementing waste classification was up to 95%, 6/6 residential groups were recognized by Hai Phong Urban Environment Company Limited as "Waste classification model residential group at source".
Green model contributes to beautifying streets
Collecting garbage at alley 256 Le Loi, Ms. Tran Thi Loc - an employee of Hai Phong Urban Environment Company Limited - said that since the locality implemented the model, the work of environmental sanitation workers like Ms. Loc has become less difficult. Up to this point, 10 people have had 8-9 people comply with the classification of household waste at source.
To achieve the model's high efficiency, Urban Environment Company Limited also arranged a suitable time and location for dumping. The collection of garbage on Le Loi and Chu Van An streets will take place from 4:00 p.m. to 7:45 p.m. every day, creating conditions for people to dump garbage at the right time and place. The garbage collection vehicle is also designed with a large green bag hanging next to it to hold organic waste.
In parallel with the waste classification model at source, Le Loi ward (old) also launched the model "Green, civilized, safe residential group" deployed in residential group No. 2. Trees were planted between the doors of two households to overcome the situation of people leaving trash bags in front of their homes. The local police force also deployed a "Security camera" model to ensure safety and security in the area, supporting residential groups to find households to dump garbage in the wrong place for timely reminders. Gradually, people's awareness of waste classification has improved significantly, becoming the habit of classifying waste every day.
Ms. Le Thi Mai (resident of residential group No. 2) shared that as soon as the model was deployed, my family and I applied and supported it, and there was no difficulty in classifying. This work will help the environment become cleaner, and garbage collectors will have less trouble.
