According to the latest announcement, Viettel has officially upgraded to platinum at OpenInfra Foundation (OIF). OIF is currently the largest international nonprofit organization in open source Cloud infrastructure, managing platform projects such as Open Stack and Kata Containers. With platinum status, Viettel is the only representative of Vietnam to enter the group of 8 most powerful companies (including Ericsson, Huawei, AntGroup, Rackspace...) with an official seat on the Board of Directors. Here, Viettel will directly participate in deciding on strategies and planning a roadmap for developing the world's Cloud infrastructure technology in the future. This strategic step marks a strong transformation from a service provider to a creator and shaper of core technology on a global scale.
In parallel with OIF, Viettel also established a new position in two other important organizations: Gold class at Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF) - the world's largest organization of the Cloud Native ecosystem, which sets standards for modern Kubernetes technology, Microservices and Silver class of Linux Foundation (LF) - the world's largest open source organization, "common home" of Linux operating system and thousands of core technology projects.
The promotion to this "third ministry" of power is an affirmation of the technological leadership capacity of Viettel engineer. To achieve this position, Viettel has gone through a process of accumulating and proving its capacity since 2022. Not only participating in seminars, Viettel has contributed a series of source codes, shared in-depth technical knowledge and solved difficult problems at global OpenInfra Summit events. Now, Viettel is old enough to sit at the same table and dialogue with the world's leading technology corporations.
Realizing the national aspiration for technological autonomy
Viettel's decision to elevate its position is completely in line with the world technology flow, as Open Infrastructure and Cloud Native are becoming the standard to replace Big Tech's exclusive models. This trend helps countries and businesses optimize costs, increase flexibility and most importantly, avoid being dependent on a single supplier. In Vietnam, this step is an act to concretize the national strategic mission to transform Vietnam from a "technology-based" country to a "technology-led, mastery and creativity" country.
Mr. Le Quang Hieu - Deputy General Director of Viettel Network Corporation (Viettel Networks) shared: "Viettel's admission to the Board of Directors of OIF is not only to affirm the brand, but more importantly, to give Vietnam a voice in shaping global technology laws. We are no longer stopping at using free technology, but are directly participating in the development of Linux, Open Stack or Kubernetes. This helps Viettel Cloud completely master the infrastructure, ensure information security and not depend on any Big Tech supplier.
Viettel's holding of a key position in international organizations brings practical and great values to the domestic market, promoting the commercialization of open source Cloud services. On the core technology capacity platform developed by Viettel Networks, Viettel IDC - the core unit of Viettel Military Industry - Telecommunications Group in the field of data center and cloud computing - will be the key supplier to promote the commercialization of Viettel Cloud "Make in Vietnam" services to the market.
The combination creates a comprehensive, closed service ecosystem from infrastructure, digital platform to specialized services and solutions. Thereby helping state agencies, departments, ministries, branches and the business community in many different fields in Vietnam to benefit from Cloud and Data Center solutions "Make in Vietnam" and "Made by Viettel" to meet the highest international standards to ensure safety and reliability at much more optimal costs than exclusive import-export solutions
With Viettel's deep participation in technology organizations, the flow of world technology knowledge (AI, Edge Computing, 5G Cloud...) is updated to Vietnam as quickly and directly as possible. This creates a solid foundation to promote the synchronous development of digital government, digital economy and digital society. The domestic business community and Cloud research organizations will enhance their international position. Units have early access to world standards and technology knowledge, connecting global partners and promoting research and development cooperation. This is the foundation for building a team of high-quality human resources and creating a transparent and strong open-source Cloud ecosystem.
This result marked a revolution, Viettel from a telecommunications network operator deploying Cloud, became a technology corporation capable of shaping the world's Cloud standards. Viettel's team of engineers will work directly, rub shoulders and discuss with leading experts from Google, RedHat, Ericsson... Viettel Cloud's core technology will be accelerated in applying the most advanced technologies such as according to CNCF standards, helping to deploy services faster, smarter and on a larger scale.
