Vinh Long is about to operate a new waste treatment plant, solving pollution at Sam Bua beach

HOÀNG LỘC |

Vinh Long - The modern waste treatment plant project is about to go into operation, hoping to completely solve the pollution of Sam Bua beach that has affected people in the past time.

The new waste treatment plant in Song Loc commune, Vinh Long province, which is about to go into operation, is expected to end the pollution situation at Sam Bua landfill that has lasted since the beginning of the year and has become serious since the end of July 2026, when garbage accumulates and spills onto the road.

Located right on the road to the landfill about 300m away, Mr. Bui Minh Dung angrily said: "In recent months, flies have flared up fiercely. The strong stench splashes directly into the house, completely disrupting my family's life.

The house opens a rice and drinking water business to serve passersby, Mr. Dung sighed and shared: "The stalls are deserted because the stench is too strong. Customers stop by to eat and drink are getting less and less, garbage trucks run by and leak water, how can they stand it".

Mr. Pham Tiet Khoa - Chairman of the Board of Directors of Tra Vinh Urban Works Joint Stock Company - said that Sam Bua landfill (Song Loc commune, Vinh Long province) with an area of 4ha, formed 7-8 years ago, has now fallen into a serious overloaded state.

Because there is no more storage space, the collection unit is forced to dump garbage onto the road. Previously, the unit transported over 100 tons of garbage to the landfill every day. Recently, due to few winning bids, the collection volume has decreased to about 40-50 tons/day.

Faced with that situation, Mr. Vo Van Ngoan - Deputy Director of Vinh Long Department of Agriculture and Environment - said that functional agencies have continuously conducted actual inspections on June 5, June 10, July 27, August 5 and most recently on August 22, 2026.

Through surveys, the exhaust gas treatment system and incinerator doors of the operating unit were damaged, so they were temporarily suspended from June 11 for repair. The transfer of the auxiliary operating unit was not guaranteed, causing garbage to accumulate rampantly in the area.

The Department of Agriculture and Rural Environment has worked and requested the operating unit to urgently spray biological products to deodorize and kill insects. At the same time, focus vehicles to collect and clear the area of accumulated garbage spilling onto the road to the factory.

Leaders of Vinh Long Department of Agriculture and Environment emphasized that they will continue to closely monitor the recovery progress of businesses. The daily storage of garbage must ensure technical procedures, avoiding recurrence of incidents causing pollution to the surrounding living environment.

Providing more information about long-term solutions, Mr. Vo Van Ngoan said that the Tra Vinh Solid Waste Treatment Plant project invested by Greenity Tra Vinh Co., Ltd. has a total capital of about 975 billion VND, with a capacity of 499 tons/day.

Currently, the project has reached 80% of the volume, using modern Martin incinerator technology from Germany. It is expected that the plant will start receiving waste on October 15, 2026 and officially operate trial runs from the beginning of November 2026.

When the Tra Vinh Solid Waste Treatment Plant comes into operation, the amount of waste in the area will be distributed and shared to the plant for treatment according to modern technology. Thereby, contributing to reducing pressure on current treatment points, gradually solving the environmental problem from waste in a long-term direction," Mr. Ngoan added.
