The historic flash flood that occurred at the end of July in the border commune of Muong Pon (Dien Bien district, Dien Bien province) caused heavy losses in human lives and property, disrupting people's lives. In addition to material losses, many households also face a heavy debt burden.
Right after Lao Dong Newspaper published a series of articles reflecting "Floods sweep away homes, debt weighs heavily on the shoulders of survivors", on October 2, informing Lao Dong Newspaper reporters, Mr. Nguyen Xuan Thang - Director of the Transaction Office of the Social Policy Bank (SPB) in Dien Bien district said that the unit has implemented many timely support policies to help Muong Pon people stabilize their lives soon.
"After the historic flash flood in Muong Pon, the People's Credit Fund coordinated with local authorities to review all affected households. Up to now, many households have had their debts cleared and rescheduled by the People's Credit Fund and have received loans to restore production," said Mr. Thang.
Also according to Mr. Nguyen Xuan Thang, in the case of the family of Mr. Lo Van Pieng and his young son who died in the storm and flood, now only the sick wife is left with great difficulties, the People's Credit Fund is completing procedures to submit to superiors to cancel the entire loan of 50 million VND.
In addition, 3 other households in Muong Pon 1 village have had their debts deferred from 20 to 50 million VND. Accordingly, households with less than 40% damage will have their debts extended; households with 40%-100% damage will have their debts deferred for 3-5 years. Particularly, households with members who have died and are unable to repay their debts will be considered for debt forgiveness, both principal and interest.
Along with that, to help people affected by floods, the bank also applies a re-lending policy to help people restore production.
"If households cannot pay their debts by the due date, the People's Credit Fund will extend the term and lend again so that people can invest in restoring production," Mr. Thang added.
It is known that, in addition to loan support policies, the Trade Union of the Vietnam Bank for Social Policies at all levels in Dien Bien has also actively mobilized and raised over 100 million VND to support people in Muong Pon commune to overcome difficulties in recent times.
