According to Carscoops, new sales data shows that sales of the US electric vehicle maker in China decreased by 11.5% in January 2025, while domestic rivals such as BYD, Changan Automobile and Xpeng increased sales.
According to data published by the China Automobile Congress (CPCA), in January 2025, Tesla sold 63,238 vehicles in China. This figure has decreased significantly compared to 93,766 vehicles in December 2024.
According to CNEVPost, the Tesla factory in Shanghai (China) has also stopped producing the Model Y model in January 2025 to prepare for the launch of a new upgraded version. The production lines will not resume operations until February 14, 2025. Part of the facilities used for the Model 3 have also been temporarily closed from January 26, 2025 to February 3, 2025.
Tesla is not the only automaker affected by customer buying trends. BYD - a rapidly growing Chinese electric vehicle manufacturing company, also saw sales decrease compared to December 2024. In total, BYD sold 300.138 battery-powered electric vehicles and plug-in hybrid vehicles locally in January 2025 (up 49.16% compared to February 2023) but down 41.62% compared to 514,809 vehicles in December 2024.
According to experts, despite the decline, Tesla's sales in China can still recover soon. The company is said to have received up to 70,000 orders for the new Model Y in the first 5 days of launch in the locality. However, it is not clear when the delivery will begin.
