The MC20 Folgore model was introduced in the fall of 2020 with the goal of taking a 3-motor powertrain as well as a great performance to overshadow the ICE model.
In 2024, Maserati said the MC20 Folgore model will be launched in 2025, at which time CEO Davide Grasso affirmed: "We are running at full speed to lead the change in electrification". However, this affirmation has now been ruled out.
In a statement to Car & Driver, a Maserati spokesperson said: "Market studies for the sports supercar segment and especially MC20 customers have proven that the company's customers are eager to drive models with powerful ICE engines." For that reason, the company believes that these customers are not ready to switch to BEV engines in the near future.
This move also replaces the confirmation that the MC20 followsore model will be terminated in the future. MC20 Folgore's death anniversary raises questions about Maserati's future of electric vehicles. However, this is not the first sports car to collapse because it was not at the right time.
Previously, the Alfieri model introduced by the company at the Geneva Motor Show 2014 was also not implemented. Alfieri was even planned to debut before 2018 as a coupe and convertible. The manufacturer also promises a V6 engine with 404 horsepower output (301 kW/410 PS), 444 horsepower (331 kW/450 PS) and 513 horsepower (382 kW/520 PS). Of course, like many other plans, nothing comes true.
