Road safety groups have called for the Tesla Cybertruck to be removed from public roads because it fails to meet the continent's basic safety standards.
Cybertruck has a total weight of up to 4 tons, while in Europe, truck models are regulated to have a weight of no more than 3.5 tons; must not be designed with sharp edges and must have a speed limiter.
There was a Cybertruck registered in the Czech Republic with an empty weight of 3.025 tons. The owner had modified the vehicle to comply with lighting regulations and installed a device to protect pedestrians from sharp edges. However, the vehicle still did not meet the weight limit, as it would have weighed more than 3.5 tons if it was carrying four passengers or heavy cargo.
According to information from the Czech Ministry of Transport, this registration is only "an individual approval of a vehicle on a national scale only on the territory of the Czech Republic", not an approval standard for the EU common market.
Commenting on the incident, James Nix from the non-profit organization Transport & Environment said: "Cybertrucks are potentially dangerous and do not meet European standards." He called for the vehicle to be removed from public roads to ensure safety.
Meanwhile, Norton Slovak - co-founder of Cybertruck.cz - acknowledged the discrepancy between vehicle weight and regulations. However, Norton Slovak suggested that the EU reconsider the weight regulations for electric vehicles due to the weight of batteries compared to internal combustion engine vehicles.
The European Committee is gathering further information for national safety regulations and measures to assess the registration of heavy-duty vehicles. Discussions with approval authorities from Member States will be held at the next meeting.
In fact, the Tesla Cybertruck has already raised concerns about safety when participating in traffic in the US. Many experts also believe that this car can become a "weapon" on the road due to its sharp corner design. The body of the car is too stiff, which can injure pedestrians and cyclists on the road. The Tesla Cybertruck can even cause damage to other vehicles.
