Not only is the best-selling car in the US market for 43 consecutive years, the Ford F-series has also been the best-selling car in the pickup truck segment for 48 consecutive years.
This model will account for 37% of Ford's total sales in 2024, showing the company's great dependence on internal combustion engine cars. Since 1977, the company has sold more than 33 million F-Series units. Meanwhile, Ford's electric vehicle sales will reach only 97,865 units in 2024, accounting for a small part of the total sales of 2,078,832 units.
The F-series is said to be part of the close relationship between Americans and large pickup trucks. In 2023, the two main competitors of the F-series are also in the top 3 best-selling cars, the Chevrolet Silverado with 555,148 units and Ram 1500 with 444,926 units.
Ford protects F-series sales by creating a long list of versions to attract customers with a variety of features and prices. Ford's challenge in sales in the US is the ability to switch from pickup trucks and SUVs to other vehicles. In 2024, pickup truck sales reached 1,158,964 units and SUV sales reached 875,865 units. The F-series is likely to continue to be a leading pickup truck in the US for many years to come. However, the weakness is that Ford is almost too dependent on one product line.
If calculated in the whole market, General Motors (GM) will win the championship with 2,705,080 cars sold in 2024 (including subsidiaries Chevrolet, GMC, Buick, Cadillac, and BrightDrop). This result increased by 4.3% compared to 2023 and was also the highest level of the company since 2019.
Compared to Ford, GM has more electric vehicles on the market, with a total of 114,426 units sold. The Chevrolet Equinox EV will appear in 2024 at an affordable price, quickly becoming GM's best-selling electric vehicle with 28,874 units. Cadillac Lyriq ranked second with 28,402 vehicles (up 210.3%). The Blazer EV also sold 23,115 units (up 4,695.6%) and the GMC Hummer EV model, including pickup trucks and SUVs, sold 13,993 units (up to 331.4%).
