Not only has the Ford F-series been the best-selling vehicle in the US market for 43 consecutive years, it has also been the best-selling king in the pickup segment for 48 consecutive years.
The model will account for 37% of Ford’s total sales in 2024, reflecting the company’s heavy reliance on internal combustion engines. Since 1977, the company has sold more than 33 million F-Series vehicles. Meanwhile, Ford’s electric vehicle sales will reach just 97,865 in 2024, a small fraction of its total sales of 2,078,832.
The F-Series is arguably part of America’s long-standing relationship with full-size pickup trucks. In 2023, the F-Series’ two main competitors were also in the top three best-selling vehicles: the Chevrolet Silverado with 555,148 units sold and the Ram 1500 with 444,926 units.
Ford has protected F-Series sales by creating a long list of trim levels that appeal to customers with a variety of features and prices. Ford’s U.S. sales challenge is its ability to transition from pickups and SUVs to other vehicles. In 2024, pickup sales reached 1,158,964 and SUVs reached 875,865. The F-Series is likely to remain the top pickup truck in the U.S. for many years to come. However, the downside is that Ford is almost too dependent on one product line.
Overall, General Motors (GM) will take the crown with 2,705,080 units sold in 2024 (including its Chevrolet, GMC, Buick, Cadillac, and BrightDrop brands), up 4.3% from 2023 and the company’s highest since 2019.
GM had more electric vehicles on the market than Ford, with a total of 114,426 sold. The affordable Chevrolet Equinox EV, which arrived in 2024, quickly became GM’s best-selling electric vehicle, with 28,874 sold. The Cadillac Lyriq followed with 28,402 sold (up 210.3%). The Blazer EV also sold 23,115 (up 4,695.6%) and the GMC Hummer EV, which includes both pickup and SUV versions, sold 13,993 (up 331.4%).
