A new study in the US shows that Toyota Sequoia has the highest probability of reaching distances from 250,000 miles, equivalent to more than 402,000 km, among the car models analyzed. Notably, Japanese brands account for 25 out of 27 leading positions.
According to a newly published study, data from more than 395 million cars in the US has been used to identify car models capable of reaching 250,000 miles during use. This is a distance equivalent to more than 10 times the Earth's circumference and is considered a very high threshold for a car.
The results showed Toyota Sequoia topped with a 42.3% probability of reaching 250,000 miles or more. This figure was 7.9 times higher than the market-wide average of 5.4%.
Lexus LS ranked second with a probability of 38.8%, while Toyota 4Runner ranked third with 33.1%. The next positions respectively belonged to Lexus RX Hybrid with 28.9%, Toyota Tundra with 28.2% and Toyota Tacoma with 25%.
Toyota continues to appear densely in high positions when Lexus GX reached 23.3%, Toyota Avalon reached 23.2% and Toyota Highlander Hybrid reached 20.7%. The first car model outside of Toyota and Lexus to appear in the list is the Honda Accord Hybrid, ranked 10th with a probability of 18.5%.
In total, out of the top 27 car models, Toyota, Lexus, Honda and Acura accounted for 25 positions. The remaining two models are Mercedes-Benz G-Class and Chevrolet Suburban.
At the brand level, Toyota also topped with an average probability of 19.7% of the company's models reaching 250,000 miles. Lexus ranked second with 14.4%, followed by Honda 13.3% and Acura 9.5%. Among the 33 brands analyzed, only 5 brands had a higher probability than the market average of 5.4%.
Notably, the study did not only focus on cars using internal combustion engines. Lexus RX Hybrid leads the hybrid car group with a probability of 28.9% reaching 250,000 miles, while Tesla Model X is the electric car with the highest probability, at 3.6%. For pickup trucks, Ram 3500 leads the group with 31.9%.
Research shows that the 250,000 miles mark is still a very difficult threshold to reach for most cars. The study was conducted by analyzing meter data for each year of use, then building a model to estimate the probability of each car model reaching different distance thresholds. Car models did not have enough data and some heavy vehicles were removed from the analysis.
The above figures reflect probabilities based on actual usage data in the US, which does not mean that every car of the same model can run more than 400,000 km. The actual lifespan also depends on the maintenance schedule, operating conditions, usage frequency and repair quality throughout the car's life cycle.
