According to data released by Thai Binh Provincial Police, in 1 week from December 25, 2024 to December 31, 2024 (when Decree 168/2024/ND-CP had not yet been applied), the Traffic Police Department, Provincial Police recorded 16 cases of vehicles violating the red light violation as follows:
During the period from January 1, 2025 to January 7, 2025 (when Decree 168/2024/ND-CP takes effect), the authorities only recorded 6 cases of vehicles running red lights:
According to information from Bac Giang City Police, before the application of Decree 168/2024/ND-CP (in 1 week from December 23 to December 31), there were 79 vehicles running red lights (including 29 cars; 50 motorbikes) as follows:
During the period from January 1, 2025 to January 5, 2025, the number of vehicles that ran red lights and were fined will be reduced to only 40 cases (including 18 cars and 22 motorbikes) as follows:
In particular, in Cao Bang, since the application of Decree 168/2024/ND-CP, there have been no recorded cases of vehicles running red lights being fined.
Accordingly, Cao Bang Provincial Police announced the results of detecting traffic violations through the Traffic Surveillance Camera System (from December 23, 2024 - January 5, 2025), with 3 vehicles running red lights, all before January 1, 2025.
Thus, it can be seen that since the application of Decree 168/2024/ND-CP, the number of vehicles that have been fined for running red lights has almost decreased in many provinces and cities, including provinces that no longer record vehicles running red lights.
The police note that from January 1, 2025, the Law on Road Traffic Order and Safety, Decree 168/2024/ND-CP regulating administrative sanctions for violations of road traffic order and safety; deduction of points, and restoration of driving license points will come into effect.
Accordingly, some violations of road traffic safety have had fines increased sharply compared to before, such as car drivers running red lights will be fined 18-20 million VND (old fine was 4-6 million VND), and motorbike drivers running red lights will be fined 4-6 million VND (old fine was 800 thousand - 1 million VND).
In order to effectively implement the newly issued law, local traffic police forces are actively implementing many synchronous measures, with the motto of both focusing on propaganda and strict handling.
The main goal of sharply increasing fines according to Decree 168/2024/ND-CP is to raise awareness of compliance with traffic laws, thereby contributing to reducing accidents, traffic jams, etc.
The police require violators to go to the police headquarters where the fine was discovered or to the district police where they reside to resolve the violation according to regulations.
After 20 days from the date of sending the notice of violation, if the violator does not come to the Police to resolve the violation or the Police have not received the notice of the resolution and handling results from the District Police where the violator resides, the Police will update information on the violating vehicle on the Electronic Information page of the Traffic Police Department and send a warning notice to the vehicle inspection agency (for vehicles required to be inspected).
The police recommend that people continue to raise their awareness of voluntarily complying with traffic laws, for their own safety and that of others.
