MegapackChargers are mobile charging stations that the company deployed right before the big holiday season. This charging station is actually a tractor-trailer carrying a mini Megapack charger. Tesla has also used Megapacks at fixed Supercharger stations with high traffic to reduce waiting times. However, this is the first time the company has brought this solution to mobile vehicles.
According to the company, the service will be available at 4 locations in 4 cities in different states during the 2024 holiday season. Max de Zegher - Tesla's charging director, said that the MegapackChargers have a capacity of 3 MWh and can charge about 75 cars. The device has up to 8 charging columns with a capacity of 250kW and is connected to Starlink. MegapackChargers are fully recharged in a few hours at Supercharger stations at quiet times such as at night.
A Megapack will cost around $1 million and weigh up to 38 tons. As of November 30, Tesla’s Supercharger network in North America reached a new milestone by delivering 12 GWh of electricity in just one day. That’s enough fuel to charge more than 300,000 Tesla vehicles.
Tesla currently has 60,000 Supercharger stations worldwide. The company plans to deploy V4 charging stations by 2025, promising charging speeds of up to 500 kW for the Cybertruck pickup and 1.2 MW for the Tesla tractor-trailer line.
Major automakers including Ford, Rivian, General Motors, Volvo, Polestar, Nissan, and Hyundai can also use Tesla’s Supercharger stations with NACS adapters. Despite the potential for more congestion, Tesla’s network maintains an impressive 99.95% uptime.
