Japan's largest automaker Toyota has told suppliers that the start of production of its first three-row battery-powered sport utility vehicle (SUV) in Kentucky will be delayed by several months, Nikkei reported.
Toyota spokesman Scott Vazin said production could begin as early as 2026, instead of the original plan of late 2025. Toyota plans to introduce five to seven battery-powered EVs in the US over the next two years.
It is known that supply disruptions and management issues have forced the car company from the "land of cherry blossoms" to postpone the start of EV production in the US by six months, that is, until around June 2026.
Automaker Toyota had planned to produce electric SUVs under its luxury Lexus brand in North America by 2030. However, that plan was scrapped in favor of exporting finished vehicles from Japan to the US.
Previously, in February 2024, Toyota invested $1.3 billion in its Kentucky factory to serve electrification efforts.
