This information was announced by Toyota Executive Vice President Yuki Nakajima at a public event at Toyota Stadium (Japan).
The Celica was produced by Toyota from 1970 to 2006 through 7 generations. The model that is about to return could be the 8th generation version. According to rumors from Japan, this new model could be launched at the 2025 Tokyo Motor Show.
After 18 years of absence (up to now), Toyota Celica is expected to return with an internal combustion engine instead of an electric car like many other car companies are taking advantage of old names. Under the hood of Celica is expected to be a new generation 2.0-liter turbocharged engine that Toyota is completing.
Earlier this year, Toyota announced plans to develop new 1.5-liter and 2.0-liter engines designed to meet the demands of electrification and alternative gasoline. The initiative is part of a strategic partnership with Subaru and Mazda to secure the future of the internal combustion engine (ICE).
A turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine is expected to be the right choice for the new Celica, with up to 400 horsepower in high-performance configuration.
