Long-term savings
In the context of the world encouraging users to switch to gasoline vehicles, many experts affirm that electric vehicles have a great advantage over internal combustion engine vehicles in terms of finances, thanks to their outstanding fuel economy and maintenance throughout their life cycle.
Ms. Ingrid Malmgren - Senior Policy Director of the non-profit organization Plug In America - analyzed: "You will quickly save more money than a gasoline car, because the energy cost of electric cars is much lower and there is almost no need for maintenance".
Data from Kelley Blue Book shows that the savings will depend on the type of vehicle, frequency of use, as well as gasoline and electricity prices in each area. However, electric vehicles often have fewer parts, helping owners significantly reduce periodic maintenance costs.
A 2020 study in the journal Joule showed that an average electric vehicle in the US, charged in combination with a public charger and at home, can help drivers save up to 7,700 USD in fuel costs over a 15-year life, compared to using a gasoline vehicle. This figure could even reach over $14,000 if charged at home during off-peak hours in states with affordable electricity such as Washington.
Electric vehicles are a sustainable choice
Not only saving money, electric vehicles are also a much greener choice. Experts all agree that electric vehicles are significantly more environmentally friendly in the long term than internal combustion engine vehicles.
According to the US Department of Energy, by the end of its life cycle, the total emissions caused by an average electric vehicle are only about half of those of a gasoline-powered vehicle.
"In essence, electric vehicles are much more energy efficient," Peter Slowik emphasized at the International Council on Clean Transport.
Even a 2023 analysis by Yale Climate Connections shows that electric vehicles emit significantly less carbon dioxide, even when electricity is used to charge from coal. For example, an electric vehicle in West Virginia, a state heavily dependent on coal, still pollutes 31% less than its gasoline counterpart.
Mr. Slowik explains this because electric vehicles are capable of converting energy into movement much more effectively. Therefore, electric vehicles are still considered a green, cost-effective vehicle and a sustainable solution for the future of transportation.
As part of the global transformation trend, Vietnamese consumers are gradually switching to electric vehicles. According to data from the Vietnam Automobile Manufacturers Association (VAMA), sales of the entire market in May 2025 reached 29,210 vehicles of all kinds. This figure decreased by about 1% compared to April, marking the second consecutive month of declining domestic auto sales.
However, the market still has bright spots from the group of electric vehicles. In the pure electric car group, VinFast brand announced sales of 11,496 electric cars in the domestic market in May, up about 20% over the previous month. The big contributor to this result continues to be the duo VF 5 and VF 3 with sales of 4,232 and 3,950 vehicles, respectively.
