On the morning of October 23, speaking with a reporter from Lao Dong Newspaper, Mr. Nguyen Van Duong - Vice Chairman of Yen Thanh District People's Committee (Nghe An) - said that regarding the incident of a pig farm in a residential area causing pollution in Tien Thanh commune, the district has established an interdisciplinary team to handle the matter.
"The district's viewpoint is to resolutely relocate the pig farm out of the residential area as soon as possible. We cannot let hundreds of people suffer for the profit of one household," said Mr. Nguyen Van Duong.
Recently, dozens of households in Tan Yen A hamlet, Tien Thanh commune have filed an urgent petition against Mr. Le Van Hung's household building a livestock and poultry farm right in a residential area, causing pollution and seriously affecting the lives of surrounding households.
For more than 10 years, Mr. Le Van Hung's family has built a farm to raise thousands of cattle and poultry, but has not used any measures to treat waste, directly discharging animal wastewater and stench into the environment.
"Our family's life is disrupted, the stench spreads from the pig farm; the polluted water source cannot be used, the family's well is also contaminated, giving off a foul smell; affecting our health, causing illness for ourselves and our family members; the garden land cannot be cultivated due to the pollution, there are a lot of flies and mosquitoes" - Mr. Tran Dinh Nhi - a local resident - said.
On October 21, 2024, Tien Thanh Commune People's Committee issued a document responding to the citizen's petition regarding the incident.
The inspection results showed that Mr. Le Van Hung's household had built 4 chicken farms since 2014 (each farm has an area of 160 m2). In July 2024, the household converted 1 pig farm to contract farming.
Solid waste is pig manure collected separately, packaged and sold to individuals. Pig urine and toilet water are collected, treated through settling pits, biogas tanks and then discharged into the environment.
At the time of inspection, the farm had 47 pigs, 2,000 chickens for meat, and 1,000 newly imported chickens.
In early October 2024, the farm had an accident where livestock wastewater flowed into Ms. Tran Thi Lien's garden, causing environmental pollution.
The authorities have requested Mr. Le Van Hung to fully comply with the provisions of the law on animal husbandry and veterinary medicine; move the pig herd out of the household's livestock area and residential area no later than October 25, 2024.
Continue to implement environmental protection measures in livestock farming, not allowing waste discharge to affect the environment and public health in residential areas.
Previously, Tien Thanh Commune People's Committee fined Mr. Le Van Hung 750,000 VND and 1,000,000 VND for violating livestock farming environment.
