Many people think this condition only occurs in adults, but in fact there are children who have it, so parents should absolutely not be subjective.
For the past 4 days, B.N.T. has been experiencing epigastric pain. The pain is described as coming in waves, worse at night, accompanied by belching, heartburn, nausea, and black stools.
Noticing the unusual condition, the family took T. to the hospital for examination. Here, the patient was clinically examined by a doctor, and ordered necessary tests and functional examinations to serve the diagnosis.
Notably, the results of the esophagogastroduodenoscopy showed a deep ulcer measuring 3-4 cm, with black bruises. The doctor diagnosed the patient with gastrointestinal bleeding due to duodenal ulcer (Forrest IIC).
MSc.BSNT Pham Thi Que - Gastroenterology specialist, Medlatec General Hospital - directly treated this case said: "Gastrointestinal bleeding is a dangerous condition, more worrying when it occurs in children. If not intervened promptly, gastrointestinal bleeding can lead to massive bleeding, anemia, shock and death".
Faced with a dangerous situation, T was quickly admitted to the hospital for inpatient treatment. With the professional competence and dedication of the medical team, after 4 days of intensive treatment, T's condition gradually stabilized, he was discharged from the hospital and continued to receive treatment at home according to the doctor's prescription.
Be careful with warning signs of gastrointestinal bleeding in children
In fact, many children aged 10 to 16 are hospitalized with gastrointestinal bleeding due to gastric and duodenal ulcers. Previously, this type of disease was mainly found in adults.
According to MSc. Dr. Pham Thi Que, gastrointestinal bleeding in children is caused by many reasons, including: lack of nutrients - lack of vitamin K; premature birth, low birth weight, stomach ulcers, gastroesophageal reflux...
Dr. Que added that there are some warning signs of gastrointestinal bleeding in children that parents should not ignore, including:
Blood in the stool: When a child has blood in the stool, the blood may be bright red or black;
Nausea and vomiting: Children may experience nausea and vomiting due to inflammation of the lining of the stomach or duodenum caused by bleeding;
Vomiting blood: One of the dangerous symptoms of gastrointestinal bleeding in children is vomiting blood;
Stomach ache: Children may feel stomach ache, or have discomfort in the epigastric region such as nausea, belching, bloating;
Exhaustion and anemia: Gastrointestinal bleeding can cause fatigue, weight loss, loss of appetite, diarrhea, weakness, and symptoms of anemia such as pale skin and rapid breathing.
With the above signs, experts recommend that parents need to closely monitor and take their children to medical facilities for timely diagnosis and treatment.
