Vinh Long General Hospital has just successfully performed endoscopic surgery, completely removing a very large hanging intestinal lining tumor from a 65-year-old female patient.
This is a rare and complicated case, requiring high professional qualifications and close coordination between many specialties, thereby affirming the surgical capacity of provincial hospitals.
Patient N.T.P. was hospitalized with an abnormally large abdomen, and had a persistent under-abdominal pain that lasted for many months. Initial symptoms progress silently, so the patient is subjective. Over time, the abdomen thickens, causing obvious discomfort, poor appetite, rapid satiety, fatigue and greatly affecting daily activities, the mentality is always in a state of anxiety.
Through clinical examination, doctors noted that the abdomen was tight, showing signs of fatigue. The CT scan results of the abdomen showed a tumor in the lower abdomen about 30cm in diameter, occupying almost the entire abdomen, pushing and compressing neighboring organs such as the small intestine, colon and bladder.
With a large size, complex location and high risk of complications, the case is assessed to have many challenges in outpatient treatment.
Given the complexity of the case, the patient received a multi-special consultation including General Surgery, I recorded diagnosis and Anesthesia - Resuscitation. After carefully analyzing the risk factors and benefits, the doctors agreed to choose endoscopic surgery to remove the tumor, instead of traditional open surgery, to reduce invasion, limit blood loss and help the patient recover faster.
The surgery lasted about 120 minutes. Because the tumor was large, occupying almost the entire abdomen and attached to the intestinal cuticle, the surgical team had to meticulously remove each layer of tissue, closely controlling blood vessels to avoid damage to neighboring organs.
Thanks to experience and smooth coordination, the tumor was completely removed by endoscopy, the surgery ended safely, without any complications recorded during and after surgery.
After surgery, the patient recovered smoothly, had little pain, could sit up, walk easily after 24 hours, eat again and be discharged after 4 days.
The success of the surgery continues to affirm the core role of the Department of Surgery - Vinh Long General Hospital in the treatment of complex diseases, while also demonstrating the effectiveness of applying high technology right at the provincial level, contributing to reducing the burden on the upper level and improving the quality of people's health care.
