On December 8, Vinh Long General Hospital announced that the Department of Surgery had just successfully performed endoscopic surgery on a case of stomach gastroesophageal buffer tumor (GIST) - a rare disease that is difficult to detect early due to silent progression.
Patient Mr. N.T.N., 62 years old, was admitted to the hospital with symptoms of addritable pain, prolonged bloating and poor appetite. Stomach endoscopy discovered a large mass of forceps under the mucus, the lining was still intact. CT-scan results determined that the tumor was about 5 cm in size, in line with the characteristics of the stomach GIST.
Realizing that this was the optimal time for intervention, the hospital held an interdisciplinary consultation to agree on an endoscopic surgery plan for cutting the tumor. This method ensures thoroughness, safety, and minimizes invasion.
The surgery useswedge resection through endoscopy, retaining the maximum stomach structure, reducing pain and shortening recovery time. The surgical team accurately determined the location of the tumor and cut it completely using an automatic cutting - connection tool, which took place smoothly in 60 minutes.
According to MSc. Dr. Tran Nhat Phi - General Surgery Department, Gists come from digestive zinc cells, which can be malignant depending on size and location. Early diagnosis and timely treatment improve long-term prognosis. Endoscopic surgery helps treat effectively, cosmetically and shortens recovery time.
After surgery, the patient was alert, had stable vital signs, was active early and was discharged after 6 days with good recovery.
The successful surgery affirmed the capacity of Vinh Long General Hospital in treating complex digestive diseases, applying less invasive techniques, improving the quality of care and expanding access to specialized techniques in the locality.
