Mr. T.D. L (48 years old, in the old Quang Tri province) almost did not pay attention to abnormal signs of the kidneys, until he had a periodic health check-up, he accidentally discovered kidney tumor but it was in a late stage. After being introduced by local doctors, he went to a higher-level hospital in Ho Chi Minh City for examination and treatment.
Through imaging diagnosis, Mr. L was diagnosed by doctors with a tumor measuring 68 x 86 x 138 mm, occupying almost the entire right kidney. Notably, the tumor hemoglobin had spread deep into the kidney veins and lower aortic veins, with a risk of death if not intervened in time.
After that, Mr. L was operated on, the surgery lasted 8 consecutive hours with the coordination of specialized teams of urology, liver and gallbladder, cardiology - vascular medicine and anesthesia and resuscitation. Doctors successively moved the liver, revealed the aorta segment behind the liver, and removed the entire right kidney and tumor blood clots in the veins.
The special point is that instead of having to combine open surgery to remove the tumor blood clot using traditional methods, the entire surgery of Mr. L was performed by robotic surgery.
Mr. L's surgery was successful. The amount of blood lost in surgery was about 600 ml, Mr. L did not need blood transfusion and kept the entire aortic vein segment.
At the scientific conference "Robot surgery in the chest, general and urology" on August 15, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tran Vinh Hung - Director of Binh Dan Hospital said that the application of robot surgery at the hospital is determined to help patients access modern surgical techniques right in Vietnam, with international quality and reasonable cost.
According to Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tran Vinh Hung, the effectiveness of robot surgery depends not only on technology but also on the ability to master techniques, experience and coordination of the team of doctors. This is an important factor for robots to promote their value in treating complex cases.
To date, Binh Dan Hospital has performed nearly 4,300 cases of robot surgery, routinely mastering 15 complex surgical categories. Among these, 95% are patients with cancer, chest, general and urinary diseases.
In the coming time, the hospital will continue to develop robot systems, expand capacity to serve patients at lower costs. At the same time, strengthen international cooperation, training and technology transfer to end-line hospitals nationwide and regionally.
According to Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tran Vinh Hung, despite the development of technology, the principle of putting patients at the center is still put first. The hospital aims to build a center for robotic surgery, combining treatment, training, research and technology transfer.
