On the morning of June 3, the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health said that doctors at Children's Hospital 1 provided timely emergency care and found the cause of a sudden healthy 13-year-old boy who fell into a coma, respiratory failure, and cardiovascular stroke.
Previously, on May 27, the child was taken by his father to the car repair shop. Children sit in a car waiting for their father to come in to discuss work. About 1 hour later, the father discovered the child in a coma, did not respond to calls, the father urgently took the child to the emergency room at Children's Hospital 1.
The child was admitted to the hospital in critical condition, in a deep coma, with severe respiratory failure, signs of acute pulmonary edema and vasoconstriction. Doctors actively treated him with mechanical ventilation, vasopressors, anti-encepathy, and antibiotics.
Thinking about the possibility of children being poisoned by gas after eliminating the causes of injuries, food poisoning... continue to discuss and ask the father carefully. The clue was found when the father reported smelling a smell of composite in the car.
The father said that the day before, he bought a bottle of plastic welding chemicals and put them in the trunk of the car. The ingredients listed on the bottle are unsaturated liquid polyester 52 - 61%, styrene monomer 39 - 48%.
According to medical literature, styrene is very toxic. When inhaled, the smell of this chemical can cause coma, acute pulmonary edema, heart attack and death if not treated promptly.
After 5 days of treatment, the child recovered well, was alert, and no longer on a ventilator. The child is expected to be discharged in the next few days.
The Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health recommends that people be highly vigilant when buying chemicals for use. In this case, it is a chemical to weld plastic, if this substance is leaked from the container, just inhaling the smell of this chemical can cause critical condition. If not given timely emergency care, he could die quickly.
