Metabolic syndrome is a group of manifestations of metabolic disorders such as: Obesity, dyslipidemia, increased fasting blood glucose and high blood pressure, ... and this is also one of the important challenges for public health.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), about 20 - 30% of the population in developed countries have metabolic syndrome. In Vietnam, metabolic syndrome is also on the rise, increasing the risk of cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes and increasing mortality.
According to a 2019 study by the Ho Chi Minh City Center for Disease Control, based on 1424 participants (adults aged 18 - 69), the rate of metabolic syndrome was 36.2%. In particular, compared to the 18-29 age group, the 40-49 age group; 50-59 age group; and the 60-69 age group, the risk of metabolic syndrome is 5.1 times; 7.3 times; and 10.8 times higher respectively. However, in the 18-29 age group, the rate of metabolic syndrome also accounts for nearly 11%.
According to the study " men's metabolic syndrome rate of Vietnamese people" published in the Journal of " connotations and diabetes" in 2023, after collecting blood pressure, weight, height, abdominal rounds, and blood samples of 2284 people aged 25 and over. The results showed that the rate of metabolic syndrome among Vietnamese people was 29.8%, more women with metabolic syndrome than men (36.2% compared to 22.9%).
In addition, the condition of metabolic syndrome also has differences related to weight. Specifically, the rate of metabolic syndrome in the obese group is the highest (33.6%), in the group that may be overweight, this rate is 28%, while in the thin group, the rate of metabolic syndrome is 29.3%.
Therefore, detecting metabolic syndrome not only helps predict the risk of diabetes, cardiovascular disease... but can also reduce the burden of community health care.
