On June 2, at Dien Bien General Hospital, Dien Bien Provincial Children's Support Fund in collaboration with Center II (Vietnam Association for the Relief of Disabled Children) opened the Surgery Program for disabled children in the province in 2025.
The surgical program for children with disabilities was initiated by Center II in 2006. After nearly 20 years of development, the program has been implemented in many provinces and cities across the country, including Dien Bien.
In 2025, the Free screening and surgery program for children with disabilities in Dien Bien province will take place at the Medical Centers of districts, towns and cities.
Through screening, 242 children with eye, jaw, ear, throat, physical disability, burns, and urinary tract disabilities were prescribed for consultation, treatment, surgery, and provided with auxiliary equipment.
The program continues to accept children who have not been screened and come to the hospital for self-examination and are eligible for surgery from June 1-6.
To prepare for the program, Dien Bien General Hospital has equipped facilities, supplies, medical equipment, and human resources for surgery according to the correct procedures, ensuring safety for children before, during and after surgery.
This year's program is accompanied by leading experts from the Central Eye Hospital, Viet Duc Friendship Hospital, Xanh Pon Hospital, Vinh Orthopedic and Rehabilitation Center... directly participating in surgery for children with disabilities, especially in difficult cases.
Mr. Pham Giang Nam - Director of Dien Bien Department of Health - said that with many difficult socio-economic conditions such as Dien Bien, children, especially children with disabilities, are the most vulnerable group and suffer the most disadvantages.
The whole province currently has about 5,500 disabled children, with diverse disabilities such as birth defects, motor disabilities, vision, hearing, intelligence, or disabilities due to accidents.
Most of them live in poor families, children of ethnic minorities, living in remote areas, where access to high-quality healthcare services is limited by geographical, financial and cognitive barriers. Therefore, many students do not have the opportunity to receive timely medical examination and treatment or medical intervention.
The free screening and surgery program for children with disabilities is a humane, practical and meaningful activity.
Over many years of implementation, the program has brought opportunities to heal disabilities, improve physical health, and ignite the fire of hope, helping children confidently integrate into the community.
Successful surgeries open the door for children to go to school, study and develop equally like their peers, thereby fostering a brighter future.
From 2019 to present, the program has screened more than 1,300 disabled children across Dien Bien province. Of these, 627 students were successfully operated on, 27 students underwent procedures, 19 students were transferred to another treatment facility and hundreds of other children were supported with rehabilitation tools as well as consulted on treatment at home.
On this occasion, the organizing committee gave many gifts to children in difficult circumstances.
