On June 1, Dr. Ho Ngoc Thai - Director of Dien Chau District General Hospital (Nghe An) - said that a female nurse of the unit had just performed a miracle to save the life of a drowning old woman.
On the afternoon of May 31, at Dien Thanh beach (Dien Chau district, Nghe An province), an elderly woman drowned and was brought to shore in critical condition.
At this time, female nurse Le Thi Mai - who is working at the Emergency Resuscitation Department, Dien Chau District General Hospital - immediately arrived and performed the rescue.
When she discovered the old lady being swept away by waves and was taken up from the sea by the two in a purple state, unable to catch her pulse, Ms. Mai immediately rushed to provide first aid. Without any supporting equipment, she performed manual heart surgery in the middle of a crowded area of panicked people.
After just a few minutes of continuous heart pressure, the old lady began vomiting in sea water mixed with foam, recovered her breathing and gradually woke up. Ms. Mai continued to provide initial medical support and instructed relatives to transfer the victim to the hospital for health check-ups.
"At the hospital, I often have to have a heart attack for emergency care, but in the middle of the beach, hundreds of people around, the pressure is huge. When I saw him breathing again, I was moved to the point of shaking my whole hand," Ms. Mai shared.
Currently, the old lady has overcome the critical stage and her health is gradually stabilizing. The quick-witted, brave and virtuous action of the young nurse not only saved a life but also spread the spirit of humanity, professionalism and civic responsibility in the community.
