New direction from Hanoi regarding viruses with high mortality rates

KHÁNH AN |

Hanoi - Vice Chairman of the City People's Committee Vu Thu Ha has just signed and issued an official dispatch on strengthening the supervision of disease prevention and control caused by the Nipah virus in the city.

Accordingly, to proactively prevent and control epidemics caused by Nipah virus in the city, the City People's Committee requests departments, agencies, branches, and People's Committees of wards and communes to actively and proactively coordinate with the health sector in synchronously and effectively implementing epidemic prevention and control measures, especially epidemics caused by Nipah virus.

The Department of Health closely monitors the developments of the Nipah virus epidemic in the world and in Vietnam to promptly advise the City People's Committee to direct the implementation of epidemic prevention and control measures suitable to the actual situation. Develop a plan to prevent and control Nipah virus disease at border gates, according to situations.

At the same time, strengthen the supervision of people entering the country at Noi Bai International Airport border gate, especially people arriving/coming/leaving from epidemic areas at medical facilities and in the community to detect early cases with suspected disease symptoms for management, absorption, and timely treatment. Demarcate and thoroughly handle from the first case, preventing the epidemic from spreading in the community, especially during the Lunar New Year and the early festival season of 2026. Coordinate with the National Institute of Hygiene and Epidemiology to carry out sampling and diagnostic testing activities when there are suspected cases of Nipah in the City.

Prepare disinfectant chemicals, medicines, supplies, medical equipment, and personal protective equipment for medical staff participating in the work of preventing, controlling and responding to epidemics caused by Nipah virus. Strictly implement infection prevention and control at medical examination and treatment facilities to ensure necessary isolation areas for emergency care, treatment and infection control in cases of suspected illness.

Proactively train medical staff at all levels on disease surveillance, prevention and control, diagnosis, treatment and infection control measures for Nipah virus disease.

Closely coordinate with the Department of Culture and Sports, city press agencies in communication work to prevent and control Nipah virus disease; proactively provide accurate and timely information on epidemic developments and response measures to orient effective communication, minimizing communication risks that cause public confusion.

People's Committees of wards and communes develop plans, be ready to respond when there is an epidemic caused by the Nipah virus entering the area; ensure readiness of disinfectant chemicals, personal protective equipment for medical staff participating in responding to the prevention and control of epidemics caused by the Nipah virus and other necessary medical supplies and equipment to be ready to respond to situations when diseases enter the area according to the "4 on-site" principle.

Closely monitor the situation of infectious diseases in the area, especially cases with manifestations of encephalitis and acute respiratory failure with epidemiological factors related to diseases caused by Nipah virus (coming/going/returning from epidemic areas, contacting cases of the disease) to proactively deploy zoning and handling measures.

Proactively and promptly inform about the epidemic situation caused by the Nipah virus and epidemic prevention and control measures so that people in the area can understand clearly, not panic and implement epidemic prevention and control measures according to the recommendations of the health sector.

The disease caused by the Nipah virus is a group A infectious disease, with a recorded mortality rate ranging from 40-75%, currently there are no vaccines and specific treatments. The virus is mainly transmitted from animals to humans, or in contact with contaminated objects and food and can also be transmitted from person to person (through direct contact with secretions, excretions of patients).
