Ca Mau Provincial People's Committee transfers the student housing area that has been vacant for many years to Bac Lieu University for management and exploitation, in order to avoid wasting public assets.

On July 21, the Office of the People's Committee of Ca Mau province said that the Provincial People's Committee decided to transfer public assets, which are houses and land in the Bac Lieu Provincial Student Housing Area, from the Provincial Land Fund Development Center to Bac Lieu University for management and use.

This move is expected to put the project into effective operation after many years of being vacant, while limiting the waste of public assets.

According to Lao Dong Newspaper's records, the student housing area is located on 3/2 street, Bac Lieu ward, Ca Mau province, including 2 5-story buildings with 150 rooms, meeting accommodation for about 1,200 students. The project was completed in 2015, but for many years it has almost failed to function, and many items have deteriorated due to not being used regularly.

Previously, specialized agencies had proposed converting the function of the housing area to social housing for low-income people and workers. The locality also set a target to complete the conversion of 150 apartments in 2026, but this plan cannot be implemented due to legal procedures.

During the time it was assigned to manage, the Provincial Land Fund Development Center has repeatedly mobilized students from universities and colleges to stay, but the effectiveness was not high, and at times no one registered. The reason was identified as the buildings being far from training institutions, while some schools already have their own dormitories and many students choose to rent rooms outside for convenient living.

Representatives of Bac Lieu University said that after receiving it, the school will renovate and repair the project to put it into use as a dormitory. The 1st floor is expected to be arranged with utility services for living and eating; at the same time, the school will propose to open a bus stop to facilitate students' travel.

According to the plan, the dormitory after renovation will not only serve students of Bac Lieu University but also receive students from other training institutions in the area who need accommodation.
