Ho Chi Minh City reclaims land from 1,617 households in District 8, with 1,020 households completely cleared to implement the project to renovate the North bank of the Doi Canal, expected to start construction in August 2025.

On February 23, Mr. Dau An Phuc - Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Urban Infrastructure Construction Investment Project Management Board ( urban Infrastructure Board - investor) said that the dredging, infrastructure construction, and environmental improvement project on the North bank of the Doi Canal is in the planning stage and implementing preparation steps.

The project is expected to start construction in August 2025, celebrating National Day on September 2.

This project will reclaim more than 5.85 hectares of land in wards 8, 9, 10, 11, 12 and 14 of District 8, of which 597 households were partially cleared and 1,020 households were completely cleared.

Mr. Dau An Phuc said that the Urban Infrastructure Board has transferred more than VND 5,400 billion in compensation, support and resettlement funds to the District 8 Compensation and Site Clearance Board for implementation.

It is expected that District 8 will hand over the site in August 2025 to meet the construction progress.

Since the beginning of February, compensation payments for the project to renovate the North bank of the Doi Canal have been accelerated. Some households are ready to hand over the land after receiving the money.

Mr. Tran Duc Tri, residing at 65 Nguyen Duy Street, Hung Phu Ward (formerly Ward 9), is one of the first households to complete the compensation payment. Mr. Tri's household received 5.4 billion VND for the 70m2 area of recovered land.

According to the Compensation and Site Clearance Board of District 8, as of February 10, 522/1,617 households have been contacted to carry out compensation work.

Of which, 364 households agreed to the compensation plan, accounting for 69.73%. The cases of disagreement mainly involved verification of the origin of houses, land and compensation unit prices.

District 8 is continuing to organize trade with the remaining households, and at the same time, reclaiming land from households that have received money.

It is expected that in the first quarter of 2025, District 8 will pay compensation to about 20% of households, equivalent to about 1,093 billion VND.

The project to renovate the North bank of the Doi Canal was approved by the Ho Chi Minh City People's Council at the end of 2023 with a total initial investment of VND4,930 billion.

After that, the total investment of the project was adjusted to increase to more than VND 7,400 billion, of which the majority is for site clearance when applying the new land price list.

The project will build more than 4.3 km of embankments along the canal, dredging part of the canal bed to improve flow and environmental sanitation.

The two routes Hoai Thanh and Nguyen Duy will be expanded to 20m, helping to improve traffic connectivity in the area.

In addition, some other important items are also being implemented, including: Construction of an extended Nguyen Duy route, 16m wide, extending from alley 157 Hung Phu to Chu Y bridge; construction of Hiep An 2 bridge; construction of a passenger wharf along the canal, combined with the development of waterway transport.

The project also completes the drainage system, trees and lighting, contributing to urban beautification.

The project is expected to be completed in 2028, helping to significantly improve the living environment of thousands of households along the North bank of the Doi Canal, while reducing pollution and flooding and creating a more spacious urban appearance for District 8.
