The People's Committee of Ha Long City has just approved the master plan at a scale of 1/500 for the workers' dormitory of Nui Beo Coal Joint Stock Company, under the Vietnam National Coal - Mineral Industries Group (TKV) in Ha Tu ward, Ha Long city.
The construction site of this Workers' Dormitory is on the land of Nui Beo Coal Joint Stock Company and is near office 2 as well as the coal mining site of this company.
According to the representative of Nui Beo Coal Joint Stock Company, the planned construction area of this apartment complex is more than 5,429 m2, of which the land for construction is nearly 1,900 m2, the rest is mainly land for trees, internal traffic... The workers' dormitory has a floor area of more than 1,700 m2, including 1 basement, 11 floors and 1 attic, with about 400 rooms, for over 1,000 workers.
Currently, in order to create conditions for underground workers to have accommodation and living after work, while waiting for approval of the design plan to build a dormitory for workers, Nui Beo Coal Joint Stock Company has rented and renovated the 7-storey building of the Coal - Mineral College into a dormitory to serve the eating, living and working needs of over 300 underground workers and interns. Each room is arranged for 4 people with equipment to meet all living needs.
Meanwhile, the company currently has over 3,300 employees, of which the number of workers are ethnic minorities from the Northwestern provinces working at construction sites and workshops in the company is about 920 people. Thus, the current collective housing area only meets a small part of the needs of workers, especially thousands of workers from outside Quang Ninh province. While "settling down and having a career" is one of the leading solutions today to attract and retain miners.
TKV currently has over 96,000 employees working in many industries in 41 provinces and cities nationwide, of which over 74,000 have heavy, hazardous jobs, with over 31,000 working in mines, mainly in Quang Ninh.
According to TKV statistics, currently, more than 20 units in the industry have invested in about 80 worker housing areas, equivalent to 5,000 apartments, providing accommodation for more than 17,000 people.
However, most of them are still apartments for single miners. There are no apartment buildings for families, so many miner families have to rent houses with very low living conditions, affecting their health, life and reducing the quality of work.
In addition to the workers and laborers who go home during the day (with shuttle buses), there are still more than 7,000 people renting houses outside, mainly concentrated in Cam Pha, Ha Long, a few in Uong Bi area. Most of them are because the units do not have enough houses to arrange for the workers.
