The sudden death of Jota, 28, and his younger brother Andre Silva, 25, on July 3 shocked the world of football, because it happened less than 2 weeks after he married his longtime girlfriend.
Spanish civil police said an investigation is underway to review " traces left by one of the car's wheels. Everything shows that there is a possibility that the vehicle was speeding."
"All tests conducted so far show that the driver was Diogo Jota," the Spanish civil police said on July 8.
The force said the tire may have exploded while the vehicle was overtaking, causing it to collide and catch fire in the Zamora province, northwestern Spain.
Just hours before the accident, Jota posted a video of his wedding on June 22 to his partner Rute Cardoso. The two had known each other for a long time before getting married and had 3 children together.
The death of the Jota brothers has caused a wave of sadness, especially in their homeland of Portugal. A large number of players who are Jota's friends and teammates from Liverpool, the Portuguese national team... attended the funeral in the outskirts of Gondomar, Porto.
After playing for Atletico Madrid, Porto and Wolverhampton Wanderers, Diogo Jota has become a fan-favorite player at Liverpool after joining the Premier League giants in 2020.
He scored 65 goals for the Reds in five seasons, won the League Cup and FA Cup in 2021-22 and helped them win the Premier League in 202425.
Jota has also represented Portugal 49 times, winning the Nations League twice in 2019 and 2025.
