According to local media, the incident occurred at around 6:00 p.m. on August 2 (local time). Jeferson Merli suddenly went missing while swimming and his girlfriend immediately called for help.
However, it was not until 9:30 p.m. that Merli's body was found. Accordingly, the cause was determined to be drowning.
Jeferson Merli was born in Vista Alegre do Alto (Sao Paulo, Brazil), played for the Union (Mato Grosso do Sul) before moving to Europe in 2019.
He has played for a number of clubs in Spain and Portugal, before signing for GD Caldelas in 2024. Merli currently lives in Braga, about 40 minutes drive from the accident site.
After the sad news, GD Caldelas club posted a statement of gratitude: "Jeferson, who has just extended his contract with the club, not only left a dedication on the pitch but also friendship, professionalism and team spirit that have always been with him.
At this sad moment, GD Caldelas would like to express our deepest condolences to my family, friends and all those who have had the opportunity to know Jeferson. We will never forget the mark and dedication he left."
