The FA Cup is open to teams from all divisions of English and Welsh football (10 divisions). There are 2 preliminary rounds, 4 qualifying rounds and 8 main rounds. The matches are played on a knockout basis.
The first qualifying round of the 2024-2025 FA Cup began on August 2. Teams from the six lowest divisions of the English professional football system have begun the preliminary round. After two preliminary rounds, teams will play four more qualifying matches (ending on October 15, 2024) to enter the first round of the FA Cup.

This year, Hednesford Town are the lowest ranked team to enter the FA Cup. The team plays in the eighth tier of English football.
According to the schedule, the 2024-2025 FA Cup will start the first round from November 2, 2024. Teams in the Premier League and the English First Division will start playing from the third round. The teams will compete in 7 rounds before finding the 2 best representatives to compete in the final match which will take place on May 17, 2025 at Wembley Stadium.
In round 1, notable matches include the meeting between Sutton United and Birmingham City, as well as Wrexham's trip to Harrogate Town.
